Grass dance head harness

does the headband/head harness have to have a big round rosette in the front? does it even have to have a rosette in the front?
what other shapes can I use for my headpiece?

I'm not sure what you mean by headpiece. Generally a grassdancer wears a head band and a roach with feathers. The head band doesn't have to have a medallion in front if you don't want one. You don't have to wear a headband at all, its up to you. You can wear a cowboy, a ball cap, a bandana or some kind of skull cap if you want. Even can just wear your hair in corn row braids. lol

as long as you are not talking about that little side straps that go from the headband around the top, only respected elders and weirdo hobs do that.

by headpiece, i meant the headband.
i have seen photos of headbands with a diamond medallion. some don't even have that, but where little medallions on the sides by their ears.
what i am asking is if i can do this in my regalia, and are their more options.

purple,

Yup. You can make the headband completely out of rosettes. You can have a rosette in the middle and two on the sides. You can have beaded fringe hanging on the front to cover your eyes. You can hang connected plastic drapping circles down the sides. You can also hang beadwork down the sides. You can hang ribbons down the sides. you can add feathers off the roach, you can hang plumes off the roach..... you can eat them boiled, fried, baked, smoked, gumboed, in salads, on sandwiches, on kabobs (quoted from Bubba, in Forrest Gump)

Oh I forgot to mention a full beaded horse harness. This is one more option!

Here's the problem Jedster, yes those guys have that, not many others. But when you get white people pushing the envelope of the dance style, then it becomes dicey. If Randy P staples a playing card to his forehead, that's okay, he's in a position to do those kinds of things. Little Billy Whiterson, from OA lodge 45, shouldn't. Hobbyists, if they are going to do this, need to follow the norm, the generally accepted rules, of powwowing. AND don't copy stuff from others (cough, cough, wink wink, you know who I am talking about). If you are a hobbyist grass dancer and you don;t know who any of those guys are, or if you don;t know who Randy P is (and I'm not counting facebook friends, that doesn't count losers) then you should stick to the middle of the road. The further we get away from the grass dance heartland, the crazier it gets. But the problem is, they think he understand it and know whats going on. Shall we continue this here? or in private?

jed please. I don't call you "Herr Doktor".....at least not in public....

I know you aren't aiming any of this at me personally...but you make several, very valid, and blunt points.

You are dead on. If you don't know WTF you are doing...just plain stop. Seems there is a perpetuation of crazy ideas just because someone saw a picture or a video out of context and then ran with a hair brained idea.

A head harness on the other hand, if done properly as my wierdo hobs examples have done, can be a seamless alternative to the hickey making shoe lace.

And that's the problem, they don't know WTF they are doing! They go to the Kentucky Indian Seminar, or whatever, and some guy gets up as the "expert" and teaches them about hot-glue gunning felt on to their apron or whatever. I blame the leaders of these groups, or the people who think they are the experts. They go to one or two real powwows while on their "vacations", act like tourists, and somehow become experts. I think they become an expert when they get some nice ndn to pose for a facebook pic with them. The leaders don't teach the proper respect and approach to doing these things (notice I am not talking about whether or not they should do them, that's a diff topic and they are doing them). Look at me, here's my winnings! Look at me, I got my pic taken with so and so. Arrrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhh.

Careful there buddy. You might burst a vessel!

Can't argue with anything you have said. You are spot on. But what can be done? It can't be stopped. It is a fundamental difference between cultures.

How do you teach that imperfection is ok?

How do you teach humbleness?

Main stream society taints all cultures that come in contact with it.

How could main stream society begin to grasp the subtleties of pow wow culture?

I don't think Randy is gonna staple anything to his head by the way. It is just plain messy.

I'd only do it if I could copy it off someone else first. And he's an elder by the way.

I'd really like to do it if it was 50 years out of date, because that's how we roll, out of date and out of style. Better than Alabaerta, what do they know about Grass dancing.
