Bone Roach Spreader

Paul had a picture of a bone roach spreader on Ebay that was reproduced in resin.... now here is my question for all you roach wearers and makers. If I were to make real bone spreaders using the picture of the resin one as an example would any of you be interested in aquiring a real moose bone spreader??? I love working with moose bones and this caught my eye!
I am always looking for new ideas in carving and this one is talking to me!!!!!

I already have a bone spreader. These days that style of spreader is seldom used outside of those that were turkey beard roaches. There are those out there that make them and sell them...one of my closest buds sells them and made mine

I am not sure if you realize but the original ones weren't really made of bone...they were/are actually made of antler (elk to be precise). There are some guys out there making them from bone though and you can find them on the market. The bone ones are usually made of beef scapula (shoulder blade). The cast resign spreader sold by some of the Craft supply places is not really the best example of the art of 'bone' spreaders. I have attached a few pics of some old ones in collections and museums. Check them out and enjoy.

Thanks for the pics powwowbum, they are great. Still the urge is there to make a few so that I can actually say that I have done another style of bone or antler craft!

Not telling you not to try it...shoot I have elk antler in my garage for the same purpose I just haven't gotten the time yet to start on it. Just letting you know not to expect to make a mint on them. The ones I have seen on the market so far are going for $150-$275 US funds for antler and $50-$150 for bone.

Heck I was thinking cheaper than that! It is the pleasure of just doing the project that teases me, not the big bucks, just reimbursement to a point for the power use and for the wear and tear on the tools.

I guess I may just sit outside when it is warmer and do a few creations from the past and add my own touch too!

No, the fat part does not go to the front on these. As I have said before spreader is really the wrong name cause they are not made to spread...they are made to hold the roach to the head and the feather in the roach. As long as the roach is made right it will lay right without having a big wide spreader in it.

Arghh..trying to do things myself. Have roach metal feather holder and leather spreader that goes under metal. How does this connect together to the roach? Hmmm...

Bone Carved Roach Spreader

I read through all your posts on this subject and can really feel your passion for your carvings. I don't know about Paul being interested in your roach spreaders, but I am. Can you carve a double-socket spreader? The only bone ones I've seen are singles and I wear two eagle feathers in mine. Thanks for responding.

Your scalplock (or tie leather) passes down thru the hole in the spreader so that it is looped on top (like you were tying a shoe-lace) so that your roach pin can hold it to your head tight. the loose ends then pass thru the leather guard, then roach base opening (in line with your spreader hole)and then you tie it under your chin (if you don't use your scalplock). You should have a second opening in the base at the back of your neck to slide a tie through that as well to secure it thru the head tie -- this will keep the tail of the roach from winding up on the side of your head... not a good look. Hope this helps. Take a look at photos of NTs and you will see a variety of ways they are anchored, depending on tribal customs.
