From what I understand, it's much like in the Sneak-Up; the accented beat represents a gun-shot and the dancers "duck n' dive" out of the line of fire.

Good link with good info. I heard Nakia Williamson-Cloud clarify the history of the DnD at the NMAI National Powwow forum. Nimiipuu Powwow Announcer Otis Halfmoon also told me the origin story and drew a map for me of the Battle of the Big Hole.

Both stories are similar to the first post on your link! Here is a link to the Nez Perce doing the DnD. Nakia is in this video.
