More proof that this style is more accurately classified as "modern traditional" as it relies heavily on style, sizzle and showmanship with a light sprinkling of traditional elements. In fact, these guys more resemble fancy dancers of the 1970-80 era, with the addition of the Kiss-like fright paint. It looks nice and certainly has flash, but it lends a new definition to "traditional," which may be a good thing since it's a living and evolving culture.

I believe the dancer in question is Kevin Haywahe. I remember when he was called "Canadian Wolfman" for the wolfhead he wore as this style of head gear was first making it's way into the dance arena after a 100 year hiatus! *L (The late Richard Poafibity originally reintroduced this style of wolf head-dress in the US).

Kevin has always been on the cutting edge of traditional dance regalia. Items he wears are sometime one of a kind.

He's a good dancer and placed 5th in men's tradtional at the powwow were this photo was taken.

One of my Narragansett friends ordered a 'Turkey Beard' roach for her husband. I don't even know what a turkey's beard would look like (probably not orange) but she was really excited about it. I never did get to see it, apparently it takes a long time to collect enough turkey beards to make one. The way she described it though, it might look something like this one, but not orange. This dancer isn't that Wayasti Perkins guy from NY is it. I didn't know he was even from a tribe, his roomate told me that. Just gossip. But being from New York he might have knowledge of the Turkey Beard Roach. But Northeast doesn't really go with that beadwork with the yellowhammers on it. Its a mystery. The carrot top mystery. Maybe someday this guy will enlighten us.

A turkey beard looks similar to what you make a roach out of. I think a turkey beard roach would look the same as a regular roach just more expensive because you only get 1 turkey beard from a turkey.

here's a picture.

Hopping Crow,
That's not like any feather roach I've seen before. Maybe they're trying to make a gustewah (sp)?

Hopping Crow --No problem, just glad you got things squared away. I see you're in St. Pete. I used to live there, then moved to Brandon before getting transferred to Atlanta. Do you dance at any of the pow wows down there?

Feather roaches arn't too common in my area, but I've seen a few nice ones. This one guy had one made out of grouse tails, and made it look real nice.

I was thinking about making one sorta out of flicker feathers, somehow stringing them up, then connecting them along my roach base, so rather than having deer hair, i'd have a row of yellow and red flicker. I think it'd look nice, but would be a hassle hooking and un-hooking it to wrap my roach.
