Exclamation Uses of Deer Antlers

I have Northern Traditional Regalia and have deer antlers and was wondering what are some good uses for them? If you have any photos that would be great!!!!!!

I took caribou horn (the part called the shovel), and married it too a nice piece of finished diamond willow, then I put beaver fur, hide, and some deer toes and old trade beads hanging from it. I made this staff/more like a club; for my son to use for northern traditional dancing. He's had many compliments on it... We took the rest of the horn we had and made buttons; they look nice on regalia, instead of store bought ones.

Antlers

Don't have any pictures, but I have seen several things done with Antlers by both Traditional and Straight Dancers.

Examples:

I have seen several Dance Staffs using Antlers - usually just at the end of the staff and with no more than 4 or 5 points with their various feathers hanging off the points. Which makes sense as I think that anything over 6 points would be too big and too heavy.

Have seen some Straight Dancers use Antlers on their staffs as the handle and some with Antlers at the end of the staff that they point to and touch the ground with.

And I am sure that those that actually belong to the Deer Clan (Tribes may vary) use the Antlers many ways.

I've seen a smaller pair of antlers mounted on the wooden frame of a gustoweah - looked real sharp.

Historical photos also have shown quite a fe folks from various tribes wearing headdresses or caps with antlers attatched to them.

There is no real use of antlers in dance clothes i know of.
Look at pictures...old pictures and lots of them..the old folks knew what they were doing. There was no antlers on staffs or dance sticks before modern times like the 60's. Yes. i am a traditionalist, yes, it stiffles your creativity. Antlers are great for handles, buttons, drum pegs, hat racks; just not dance clothes..Ask your folks or research. Good luck!

Antlers on a gustoweh are reserved for chiefs though... I would'nt suggest this to anyone.

Talked to my folks just to doublecheck, they used antlers for buttons and staffs back when my folks were kids. Ma said the grandparents were into their 40s before they even saw a car (although they had seen boats and planes). They used antlers too. So did their parents before them. We use antlers alot in my neck of the woods. We really don't have any other neighbors there other than other Ojibwe people.

Aniishaa.. O'apii we had powwows over in the Sault Ste Marie area back in the 60s (1260s, 1360s, 1460s, etc...)... part of what we did at that time was trade with the people we invited. Dakotas, Them 6 Nations folks, Pottowatimi, Ottawa. A lot of times, they would give each other gifts too. That's the way it was back then. That's the way it is today. Look at how those anishinaabe wear uyate style head roaches. Look at how those Navjos dance jingle. Look at how those Inuits grassdance. Mii sa gegit sa go ehzichigeyag ingiw nishnaabeg mewinzhaa.

Inshort, I say use them antlers son!!!!

It's the indian way for sure.

Excellent

Very Well Said there Sookout Sh' Nob!

We must all realize that Antlers like many natural materials were used by our people for many, many things including Dance Clothing. And thus we should all be careful about putting exact times on when some natural materials were first used as Dance Clothing.

Some items can be given an exact time: like trade pony beads or bugle beads, or trade yarn, etc. But timing natural animal materials is much harder.

Example: Don't tell some of the California Tribes that have been doing the Deer Dance for a very long time that Antlers were not a part of Dance Regalia. And don't tell some South Eastern Tribes that did a Dances with Antlers for the Europeans in the 1600s that Anterls were not a part of Dance Regalia either.

Hey there everyone, I use antlers all the time! I carve them into the shape of feathers as pendants, as well for making hair pins in the same material! I have the bone ones posted in the gallery but I also make them in antler. I make the mouth pieces of pipes out of antler as well, gives the pipe a great added touch! Dancing sticks made with deer legs and antler look well too! My walking sticks have handles made of antlers! Knife handles yes, work great when you cut them in a band saw. Letter openers and barrettes too. So many uses!

Exclamation Antlers

I have learned that any thing natrul that you use may it be leather antlers feathers etc. You have the spirit of that animal with you.before a person makes anything be sure to have it blessed and smuged to clear bad medicine. Remember once you have killed any thing It can protect you or be a berden.
