Question Colors to use on the Jingle Dress and Shawl

My daughter, Chippewa (Mille Lac) needs a Fancy Shawl and Jingle Dress. What colors are used by the Chippawa? Many thanks. I have had no luck in getting this answered.

I am not aware of any "tribal" color preferences. However if you are trying to be "traditional", you will find that the later historic examples of Anishinabe dress items made from trade wool or velveteen were usually of dark colors like black, red, burgundy or navy blue. If beadwork had a solidly beaded background, that background color was almost always white. On the other hand if you are making a contemporary outfit, there are no limits on color choice. The people I knew from Mille Lacs dressed in every color under the sun. Hope this helps.

I'm not Chippewa...heck, I'm not even Indian, but I recently spent some time up in on the Mille Lacs Reservation, and I saw some very nice older jingle dresses in the museum. They were, as Czechy indicated, in darker colors. The one that really stood out to me was a black-background calico with little purple flowers and purple and green trim. Very delicate looking.

The colors will come to you or her if you wait. Be patient.
