Question about term....

I just have to ask.....

After reading about the beadwork pricing and seeing the term "cape" and after seeing it used else where on the board...

Is this a term that everyone uses in the southern region or do others use it. I have always heard them called yokes. Capes I have heard more in connection with the beaded buckskin tops.

Doesn't make a difference... I'm just the curious kind..

Any others have terms they wonder about also?

Up in the northern plains, I've always heard them called capes. I never heard them called yokes (not even at Southern pow-wows) until I came to this forum. :dontknow:

Well, no offense, but yoke reminds me of oxen. (tee hee)

To tell the truth, when I started making them for my daughters,
I didn't know what to call them. When we talked about them,
we'd say, "you know the part that goes around here". I asked around
a lot and finally someone who pow-wows out of state said, "cape".
And BINGO* we knew that was it.

When I danced (for fun) back in the dark ages, only a couple of us
girls even had capes. And I wasn't one of them. I guess that could
go along with," when I was young, we were so poor that ..."

Anyways, what do call the piece that usually matches your hairties,
and hangs from your choker? Just wondering....

Aiye... I've never heard the term "cape" until I talked to my friend Chenoa from down south :) Up here in the north... the Eastern Woodlands, we've always called them yolks. I wonder which term is more traditional?

No offense but, the choker hangie down part! :Chatter

to be serious/medallion if it is a beaded piece similar to a rosette

I have to say it:

OH MY GOSH! YOLKS???

**************************************

Anyway, Granny, my choker hangy downy parts are usually appliqued, and do match the braid ties - appliqued also. But they're hardly ever round like a rosette. I try to make them a unique shape to fit the design.

Maybe choker medallion??

(Please don't think I'm a non-beader. Most of the people that I sew for want it right now, and want it cheap. :blushing: I mean, inexpensive.)

Now what's the difference between a ruffle and a flare?? One girl wants me to make a skirt with a flare, not a ruffle. But the example she showed me sure looked like a ruffle to me.

"Now what's the difference between a ruffle and a flare?? One girl wants me to make a skirt with a flare, not a ruffle. "

Hi, now I'm not totally sure but I think a ruffle is a straight piece of fabric that is gathered as it is sewed..... and a flare is a curved piece of fabric, with the inside part of the curve sewn on the bottom of the skirt.... but I don't know... that's just how I make the difference between the two!!

Thanks !! I tried it and ended up having to gather my flare. My calculations were a little off. Next time I'll get out my circle formulas: r squared or is it 2r for circle circumference?
