shawl sizes

Hi everyone! I picked out some free fabric out of a box at a meeting this year, thinking....this fabric would be perfect for shawls.... Most of the fabric was in a length perfect for adult sized shawls, with some leftover, but other pieces looked like they would be a child's sized shawl.

I checked this Learning Circle page from Noc Bay on making shawls. They gave the measurements for adult sized shawls & said to adjust measurements for child sized shawls. I was just wondering if there was a typical measurement for a child sized shawl plus the fringe length?

Check the Archives, Duh!

Yes, it finally dawned on me that I should check the Archives.

Rule #1: Before beginning a new thread, asking a question, always check the Archives. The Archives are your friends.....sharing a wealth of information.

Here is what I found. Does it sound all right? I will accept any hints/suggestions as I have never made a child sized shawl.

1st Jr's or Teen Shawl

63" wide 35"long + another 14" for the fringe

Younger Child

53" x 26" + 17" fringe

42" w x 35" l (includes 16" fringe)

Any comments?

That's some good reference measurements.

I always fit the shawl to the child, with a few inches wider to grow, and a couple inches longer....and personal preference.

The fringe measurements may be off slightly. I would put standard length - 14" fringe on a younger child's shawl...and 17+ on a Teen/Older child. Some teens want the 20+ fringe.

Thanks! Now I have an idea of what the shawls and fringe length should be like. I wanted to do something special with the fabric I chose out of the box. There are always people bring things to share and donate to the raffle at the Learning Circle meeting that I go to. I never leave without more than I came with.
