My father-in law made my wraps for me. But I know he used an exacto blade to cut the otter.

That's the 1 thing I would suggest.

well, i just finished cutting out the hair ties, and they turned out great for a first time. it just took some patience and the use of the suggestions , so thanks.

I'd suggest cutting the otter/mink in half then part way in middle so it is wrapped and it dangles. hairites easily fit on the bottoms, or you can attach them to hairties.

Also, cut with the "grain" of the fur, and skin side up. Personally it just takes patience. The best ones I've made are made from the center neck to length of tail tips. I lay the hide out flat, then take my measuring tape and pen. I figure out the very center of the back from head to tail, making a light line, then use this as my first guideline. When you cut this, you already have two equal sides of both of your hairties finished. A good large otter pelt in Alaska goes for $200-250.00, each.
