Just more people who want to say "my grandma was a Cherokee princess". I really hope that stuff doesn't happen. For some reason, people think they can get rich from casino action, or all that cool free government stuff they think is out there.
A friend of mine did part time receptionist work for a Seminole owned casino in Fl.. She said at least twice a week, people would call saying that they had Seminole blood from a few generations back-how did they join the tribe? She said her bosses told her just to tell them that she was a blonde, white chick who had no clue and to google it.

"The Caney Indian Spiritual Circle is an organization devoted to the path of shamanic enlightenment as it was trailblazed by ancient mystics and wise elders of the Taino Native people in the Caribbean islands over four thousand years ago."

Did the Taino do sweats?

Did the Taino do sweats?
Context is needed here...

Are we talking the Sweat Lodge in the modern sense?
Then No

Did they do some kind of Sweat Lodge? Difficult to say unless we can find some actual Taino Peoples that still live there. I have a hard time accepting any one group that professes to show us the light through "Shamanic enlightement" trailblazed by Ancient mystics and wise elders from 4000 years ago! To me those throw up red flags, for several good reasons; The Term Shaman is a typical European Term, Same with "wise elders", "mystics" all catch words to sell an Idea and that is that Ancient Peoples had some kind of forgotten Knowledge that has been recently "Discovered" after being lost for over 4000 years! This is a variation of other so-called mystics and Shamans use and that is to find a Tribe in this case Tainos which would be difficult to go check on and make up stories and if you a good enough salesman you can make lots of money doing this!

In my own experience with Sweat Lodge there was not a man at the door taking admission...

you are what you believe in

I think we need to keep abreast of the fake shamans. who are trying to fool people with their lives, thievery, and disrespect of our way of life. They will only perpetuate the negative and will not reach the spiritual aspects of healing and helping one another. We need to always be aware of people who base their self worth on lies and trickery and need to protect our children from these kind of people. We need to teach our youth the good ways and keep our hearts and minds pure and good. No harm will come to us as long as we follow our way of life and live right...goodness will always prevail over evil....

For those who do learn the true ways from their elders in their homeland, it doesn't affect them. We do not go out in search of our identities from those we do not know. They are right here in our communities or neighbouring rezzes.

It's best for us to trust our own. Even the urban native people "go home" for their ceremonies. We know who is/isn't the real deal.
I have to agree with Kiwehnzii in the end. If they want to call themselves 'healers' or 'shamans' then fine- there are 'medicine men/women' of many types from all of the continents that have found their own path to medicine. However, they definitely shouldn't be claiming to belong to any Nation they don't belong to so they can fake authenticity and increase sales. Expose them whenever possible, definitely, but in the end the only people who are going to pay for their services are not really interested in the traditional ceremonies - they have their own agenda they are seeking to fulfill. I do think these fakes really discredit the true healers, but in the eyes of who? I would like to think not of anyone within the tribe.

My whole life I've craved ceremony and community, and my mother (who was adopted and has no interest in her native heritage) tried to raise me as 'white' as possible - if you know what I mean. It didn't stop the real me from coming out; when i was a child I used to tell people I wanted to live on the land like the indians. I never knew my heritage back then and my mother used to 'shhh" me; I was just a little kid rambling on in my wanna-be make believe world. When I got older the feeling of being separate never went away. The first time I went to a powwow I couldn't stop myself from crying. BUT, guess what? I never 'hired' a self-proclaimed Shaman or Medicine Man - I didn't have to grow up on a rez in community to know what a bunch of crap (excuse my language) these fakes were trying to pass; and I wasn't going to reconnect via a paid sweat.

One day I'll find the road home, but until then I know the difference between real and hollywood, and really the harm that comes from these fake shamans is only to their own twisted existence. Not that what I say matters, but I do think that the lady who goes to the crystal shop to get her aura read and then have a session with "Harley Swift Deer Regan" isn't going to suffer more than damage to her wallet; thankfully. :)

Quote from the site:
"The Difficulties of Creating a Sweat Lodge by Yourself

There are many obstacles in making a successful sweat lodge. Much of the literature about sweat lodges implies that making a sweat lodge is a relatively easy undertaking. Take it from me, making a sweat lodge in nature with a hatchet and a ball of twine can be a major undertaking and involves a lot of time, skill, and natural materials. This, along with the effort it takes to gather firewood and finding the right stones may take more than an entire day."

... and really who has a whole day to devote to ceremonial sweats?
Maybe i should invent a drive through sweat lodge... for Shaman's on the go.

Look at this gem:

"Founded by Kellee Maize, her fans, friends & Nakturnal, The Owl Tribe is a performance & healing troupe and a community & movement of men and women that promote peace, love & transformation via music, indigenous wisdom..."

So where did she learn this indigenous wisdom? Her last name is MAIZE??? Corny, that's for sure.

ya know fake healers and stuff has been out there since god knows how long. i just tend to ignore ppl like that and when its elderly ppl saying that best bet is to smile and still treat them with respect, you never know they might have oldtimers. my nana had that and she used to say the most outlandish things sometimes but i just knew it was because of oldtimers. but with the younger crowd who does the fake healing and stuff theres no sense in doing anything about it, eventually theyll get their comeupins. just ignore them.

I have sometimes thought that their spirits, that is what's left of them will have to run a long and painful gauntlet when it's time to journey into the next world.

Having a good several online conversations with people, especially those living in Europe I can say a lot of them tend to follow the $teachings$ of these plastic shamans or medicine people more than they would believe the reality from an actual NDN person.

A good many of them think we all have dream catchers hanging everywhere. I told one that many of us do, some scented and hanging from the rear view mirrors mounted on our ponies.

There was a few in particular who attempted to push the teachings of Silver Birch and White Feather upon me.

Or they could be right. Who knows?

Typically, the only people who care are those who believe they are losing money-making gigs by virtue of their existence.

Hello, Zeke

Do you mean business minded NDNs worried about someone else getting a piece of their action?

I think there are some who care for other various reasons aside from capital gain.

Not anyone whose identity isn't threatened.

Business minded? Only if you support race baiting because your wares -- whatever they are -- are being beaten in the market.

So according to you, any NDN who has a complaint regarding these plastic medicine people is typically someone very concerned about losing money to such?

Just because someone makes such a statement does not mean everyone else is going to go along with it, Zeke.

I know a good several NDN people who acquire no money selling culture or ritual, yet still have complaints regarding these plastic medicine people. These people I know along with myself work for a living and when meeting someone new we are cordial enough to extend greetings instead of immediately attempting to discredit them.

My intentions here is to cordially share in conversation, not to compete in grating debate or be burdened by those who do.

Hopefully we have an understanding and can continue in a friendly manner.

Yes. If you think otherwise, ask their reasoning and distill their answer.

Being unable to discredit it is the same thing.

I see nothing short of cordial in my discourse.

"Just because someone makes such a statement does not mean everyone else is going to go along with it." Where have I heard that, before?
