People are going to pay for/believe what they want to believe.
Unless you're mad that they're not paying you, who cares? |

It just bugs me that people are paying for what they think is "real NDN" stuff. I don't like to see people taken advantage of-but like P.T. Barnum said "there's a sucker born every minute".

BUT i am starting to think that we are perpetuating a new stereotype of us by looking like crybabies at times or as someone LOOKING to find misappropriation as much as i hate twinkies.....and trust me i do.....it disgusts me.......but the ceremony sellers speak for themselves i personally go after artists/crafts vendors because i see them calling themselves native and making bucks that a REAL native should the equivalent of ward churchill getting another "indian" job it does infuriate me that the twinkies have corny art out of their own shops and studios selling crap for bukku bucks while people like mabel teller and many others open the back of thier station wagon and set a table up while they sit on the tailgate at powwows and flea markets barely scratching out a living.....i do background on the twinkie artists and it pisses them off when i tell people that they arent native and steer business towards real indians.....oh well....screw 'em Last edited by Toolbox; 06-07-2013 at 10:58 PM.. |

i now been twinkie exposing for quite some time.....twinkies seem to outnumber us.....and twinkie supporter/apologists are like an endless hoard
i personally think more tribes should issue official statements on the most offensive of the offenders as the hopi did, the pueblo did, the lakota did, the salish did.....and we should make sure it circulates....not just among us but among the non-indians (who many wouldnt appreciate being taken by frauds)...some dont mind being ripped off and believe what they want though...there is no help for them |

I say again, the IACA does not protect the artist, it protects the buyer. The real barrier for many artists is not competition, it is marketing. I tell you, what I tell any one wanting to sell their artwork: If you want to make money from art like you would from a job, then you need to be a professional. This means cultural comprise in some cases. First you have to get your work in the right place. High end silver and beadwork (or any other art work), rarely sells for good money at powwows, flea markets, or craft fairs. You have to get in galleries and shops. Since an artist is rarely a good salesman, you got to get with gallery owners who are going to market your work. Buyers are attracted to an artwork because it communicates with them. But the sale is a result of a love affair with the piece. A good gallery will bring the metaphorical flowers and chocolates on behalf of your work. And you are going to pay them, usually 40-60%, for their investment in showing and selling your work. Second you must constantly develop your skills. So, you can deliver fresh, quality work on time and without compromising your artistic vision. |

Enlightened
Even though this thread was started a long time ago, I am so glad that I read it thoroughly. I have always known that there were people who claimed to be shamans or medicine men and do the things discussed here, especially after it was brought to light by the James Ray incident. However, I had no idea the epidemic, if you will, was so widespread. As some of you mentioned, for every one you expose, they move and change their title and another drove of them emerge. It is truly sad. I am thankful that I am allowed to be a member of this site so I can learn about these sorts of things.
I also think that today's society is in such a way that people do not have to, and are not taught to, think for themselves. People will fall for anything. If people could rationalize, they would realize "hey.. something's wrong here!" |
