I know people from both nations
And they are nothing alike and dont not have the same beliefs
NOT even close
Probably as far apart as could be thought of

Not exactly.

Shaman originally referred to the traditional healers of Turkic-Mongol areas such as Northern Asia (Siberia) and Mongolia, a "shaman" being the Turkic-Tungus word for such a practitioner and literally meaning "he or she who knows."

Some say the Tungusic word šamán is from Chinese sha men, "Buddhist monk," borrowed from Pali śamana, ultimately from Sanskrit śramana "ascetic," from śramati "he fatigues" .

"The word shaman is in fact loosely used for almost any savage witch doctor who becomes frenzied and has communication with spirits. In its original form it appears to be a corruption of the Sanskrit Shramana, which, indicating a disciple of Buddha, among the Mongolians became synonymous with magician" (The History of Religions (1918), E. Washburn Hopkins ).

Other scholars assert that the word comes directly from the Manchu language, and indeed is "the only commonly used English word that is a loan from this language". (Crossley, Pamela Kyle (1996). The Manchus. Blackwell Publishers)

In the Teanga Gaelach, also known as the Gaeilge of Ireland, the 'Shaman', is the 'Monk of the Fairy Mounds'as the word 'shee' from the Irish word 'sí', and in the Scots Gaelic 'shìth', - both meaning "of the fairy mounds" or "of peace". Both names are derived from the Old Irish word 'sídhe', that is "of the mounds". The second part of the word 'Shaman', originates from the Teanga Gaelach (Gaeilge) word for 'Monk', that is 'Manach'. Hence the overall word, which is 'Sheemanach', meaning "Monk of the Fairy Mounds".

Another explanation analyzes this Tungusic word as containing root “sa-”, this means “to know”. “Shaman” is “one who knows”: a person who is an expert in keeping together the multiple codes through which this complex belief system appears, and has a comprehensive view of them in their mind with certainty of knowledge.

The word passed through Russian and German before it was adopted into English.

Since English, Russian, German, Gaelic, Manchu-Chinese, Mongol, Pali, Sanskrit and Turkish are NOT languages that arose on this continent, your assertion that a shaman is "a chief [who] could turn himself into an eagle" is an implausible and inaccurate definition. Put simply, the People of this continent do not have someone called a shaman in their social structure.

The term chief is another inaccurate term, but I won't bore you all with the details of where that came from except to say that the usage of the word by the original poster is fanciful at best.

I still wonder if we were not to eat meat why did our people do it? you wont find more spiritual people than us , I can see that passion of getting ones point across why cant our passion be recognised? When getting lifes lessons as a child and young woman it was always about how to use what we have the rite way and how to be thankfull for what we have been given. Perhaps the ways you cherish works for the people it was meant for by their creator, I totally respect that, but we have our own ways and beliefes givin to us by our creator.

I have heard many wise things posted on this website about there own personal experiences.
This website is devoted to the Powwow and since most of us share that common thing we also talk about our own ways.

There are over 500 tribes in these United States and Canada has countless more...
We share some common things but in reality we are different in alot of our ways.

Too often someone that is not familiar with Ndn's will try to lump us together in one big pot and say they are Natives and thus they are spiritual
Next a wolf will come out and finally someone will bring up a Shaman.

This thread was started by an article that reported that Ndn's were Healthy long ago
Hell we all knew that!!!
It is just nice to see the scientific community confirm what we already knew!!!!
The article went on to say through scientific proof that we ate a variety of MEAT and we were damn healthy for it
WE did not suffer from TOOTH DECAY,DISEASE and all the other ailments that were being suffered in Europe at the time
WE DID NOT HAVE THE BLACK DEATH, SMALLPOX
COWPOX
TUBERCULOSIS
NONE of those diseases were apparent in this country until they were brought here
My own people died by the thousands and thousands the first time they were exposed to small pox!!!!

HEAR ME NOW
We do not need your Newage Whackadoo Mishmash of Far and Near eastern crap to spew out of you
Do you honesty believe that that will convert anyone on here when it is obvious what we were doing worked fine for the LAST 20,000 YEARS

I will answer my own question with a resounding

NO

Not trying to convert anybody here, but even the Bible says...

Romans 14:2 (New International Version)

One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.

So...vegetarianism in this context is most definitely not associated with a higher plane of spirituality.

Recollections of Srila Prabhupada in Hawaii, 1976

Quote:

Letter from Syamasundara dasa

Please accept my best wishes, and most humble obeisances. All glories to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Where would any of us be had He not so mercifully come to the West? What would any Westerner know about Krishna, Vrindavan, the Maha Mantra, or Prasadam? So many things...
I was living on the East coast of the United States in 1976 when I heard that Prabhupada was going to Honolulu. I was ready to “get warm”, and also spend some time with my most merciful Guru. I flew to California to visit the devotees in San Francisco; my old stomping grounds. Jayananda was there, and so many devotees that had helped shape my Spiritual life. Then I flew to Honolulu, and was delighted to see Prabhupada again. I wasn’t planning on staying for long, but I got to sleep just outside His door on the balcony. I could lay down, and tilt my head back, and watch Him working at His desk almost the whole night long. He did so much translating there at that Temple.
One morning I think it was May 1976; Siddhasvarupa dasa came to visit. I have never had good interactions with Him, and I honor Him from a distance. I had met Him in Lahaina, Maui previously, and had always been treated with disrespect from Him. I was pretty “delicate”, and have always had a very long sikha. I used to hear comments from Siddha about it, and the attachment He thought I had about it whenever He saw me. Prabhupada said not to worry. That there were worse things to have attachment for. I heard Him say that ton several occasions when someone criticized one of us for the length of our sikhas.
One day Prabhupada was trying to gently persuade Siddha to “get with the program”. Siddha used to actually challenge Prabhupada; that maybe Siddha’s ideas were superior to His Spiritual Master’s plans. It was really immature, and un-believable how He carried on. Anyway one day I was standing by Prabhupada’s window over-looking His private garden; when Siddha came in. He was whining about all of the “pretty boys”, and Homos in ISKCON. Prabhupada just let Him vent, and didn’t say much of anything. After a while Siddha just left. He didn’t get the reaction He had wanted.
Prabhupada sat at His desk for a while.
I was feeling really angry at Siddha, but also self-conscious about my own sexuality.
Prabhupada just sat there quietly, and deep in thought for awhile. He looked over at me briefly and said, “What is the difference if a person is held in this Material World by a gold chain, or a silver chain?”
I said “I don’t know Prabhupada.”
He then said “I am glad that Siddha Swarupa is chanting, and reading my books.
“But He is always focusing on everybody else, and not on the Supreme Person.
“That’s the important thing.”
From the early days in San Francisco I saw so many people come to the Temple, Kirtans, etc... There were many Gay, and Lesbian people. Prabhupada was always aware that these people were among His audience.
He always seemed to not give it a whole lot of notice. I know it probably seemed a bit “strange” to Him at some level, but He didn’t like any of His disciples to make comment about it. I hope this little slice of ISKCON History is interesting to you. I know that Prabhupada knew my sexual identity; but I never, ever felt anything but love; equal in every way with the love He displayed, and felt for any other person so fortunate to come to Krishna Consciousness in this lifetime. That’s the real thing, isn’t it?
Your friend, supporter, and servant.
Syamasundara dasa
