Inquiry opens into police shooting of Native man
Wednesday, July 14, 2004

The government of Ontario, Canada, opened a public inquiry on Tuesday into the death of a Native man who was shot by police during a Native rights protest.

Members of the Stoney Point First Nation were protesting at Ipperwash Provincial Park when police opened fire on them, killing Dudley George, 38. One officer was convicted of criminal negligence causing death and resigned from the force.

George's family settled a wrongful death suit with the police. But the inquiry was called to determine how the shooting happened and other issues surrounding the police action against the protesters.
