I wouldn't go so far as to call some of these groups fraudulent. I've met some members of some of these groups and they are of Cherokee descent, documentation and all. They just don't meet the requirements of enrolling.

john_cornsilk was kinda harsh, huh?

I still don't get why there are so many groups claiming Cherokee affiliation. How come there aren't oodles of purported Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, Lakota, Dine, etc., etc., groups?

It's frustrating because it gives those of us with legitimate Cherokee heritage a bad name...

DANG!

It's not about many of the individual's, it's the organization's and their heads that is what makes them Frauds. Many of the individual's, most likely are descendants of a tribe. But to claim that these "Groups" are legit, no, they are not recognized by any of the Tribes that they claim to come from.
Many of the people from different tribes were scattered all over the state's through the Indian Schools and the Relocation Act: Carlisle, Cantonment, and there are so many other's that the list would take too long to put up here. But they were still member's of a "tribe" and many of them stayed where they were sent, many did go home, but for those who stayed---that doesn't make a "Tribe" just a family and descendants, not a whole "Tribe". Now if they called themselves "Organizations" or something like that, I really don't think that anyone would have much problems with it, but to call themselves a full "Tribe" with so-called "Chiefs", now that is a problem.

What do you guys know about the United Cherokee Nation? I have a friend who joined, but I'm worried because I've heard that they had a problem with some high-up leaders stealing money a few years ago.

john C wrote this to me so I can understand a litle more about chickahuaga's, and believe it or not I got a post with no cussin, LOL, way to go John! this was my question:

the lost cherokee of AR never claimed to be Chickamauga, but all the sudden all these off shoots of LC are claiming to be Chickamauga and going for federal recognition, and these groups are sprouting up left and right,(if you haven't noticed) where do the Chickamauga fit into Cherokee History?

Actually KiowaKat there is no such thing as a separate tribe or a people called "Chickamauga", This was merely a term used by the Americans to distinguish between the followers of Dragging Canoe and those abiding by the peace treaties of 1777, called the Chickamauga Cherokee by colonials..

Dragging Canoe had led a group of Cherokee out of the towns of the Overhill area, after a devastating battle where the towns were destroyed to the area of Chickamauga River (South Chickamauga Creek) in the Chattanooga area, where they established eleven towns, including the one named Chickamauga. And Like I said once before it was from this time spent on these waterways that they got their name, by the Colonials who called them the Chickamauga. Just like the Oconaluftee Indians (Eastern Cherokee) lived on the banks of the Oconaluftee River.

Dragging Canoe died in 1792, and for all practical purposes so did the name Chickamauga, some of the followers of Dragging left the Nation before the Trail of tears Round up, for Arkansas settled and treated with US as a separate Group of Cherokee BUT, NOT as Chickamauga Cherokee, this is all bullshyt dreamt up by the Cherokee wannabe craze, they all left Arkansas in 1828 when the U.S decided they wanted them out of Arkansas to make room for the rednecks, they went to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma and became known as Old Settlers, cept for a few that followed the Bowl to Texas and got slaughtered...

All this talk about these various groups brought an old heavy metal song to mind. So with great apologies to Bon Jovi...

To the tune of "You Give Love a Bad Name":

You claim you're an elder, a shaman, or chief.
You promise them membership, then give us grief.
You offer them sweats or an Indian name.
But you've got no bloodline to back up your claim.

Oh, you're a fantasy.
Oh, got no history.
Say what you will,
But I know what I see.

Chorus:
This isn't a tribe,
It's an Inc.
You can't sell a culture or identity.
You might fool some,
But you don't fool me.
You're just a friggin' wannabe!

The truth that I've learned can't be bought with a price.
Passed down by my fathers who paid with their lives.
Traditions unshaken with passage of time.
Not "Instant Indian" for $9.99.

Oh, got you on the run.
Oh, hunted down one by one.
We're not going to stop
'Til the battle is won.

Chorus:
So, put down your drum.
Remove your headdress, please.
Your dimestore feathers and jewelry.
Leave native ways to native folks like me.
We've got authentic genealogy.

But these groups weave facts with fiction because they "say not everybody was slaughtered or moved to Ark, they hid out and after a period of time they came back"!!!

And because no one can check on that it because facts for wannabes

I have always said its because we Cherokees have been so documented in books.
The Wannabe groups, dont have to go back and find an elder to ask for information, they can read it for themselves and use what fits there agenda. This is why there are so many different groups they can make up there own history.

Just like adoption, "I was an adopted Cherokee" they would say...
Funny thing is we as a tribe hardly ever adopted anyone outside our tribe it just was not common, made them slaves but not adopted them, hell look at the freedman...
That whole thing would have been solved if we had adopted them back then but we didnt!

All what John wrote is in several differnt history books, but again they take a kernal truth and spin it into what they want it to be!!!
Its makes a better story that you had these remnants running around in the background hiding out, sneaking around.

This runs against we all know about us Ndns!!!
We dont hide!!! We seek others of our own tribe and rejoin them!!!

Its non-ndns that was running away from something like all of Europe but we ndns would seek our own to live with!!!

I have to agree with Josiah, many make up stuff so that it sounds good. I have heard too many people telling me that their "Grandmother's" were full blood and hid out. I was told one this past summer that blew my mind. A woman told me that her family had hidden in a cave for generations and that her father was "Full Blood" Cherokee and that there were no documents on their family until her. She went on to say that the state had given her family that land as "Indian" land since they had lived their for so many generations. Then she proceeded to tell me that it was in her dad's "Will" that the land was not allowed to be sold outside of the family.

Okay, I looked at her and about fell over.

First of all--how many families were actually living in this cave or did they intermarry siblings? We are talking (supposedly) several generations here.
If she was the first one born outside of this cave and with an actual birth cert. how is it that her dad knew about Wills? Let alone to make one up before he died?
Then, if they were Indian, she really spoke very good English and didn't speak Cherokee at all. And I could go on.
And if the land had been given to them by the state in that way--then there would be documentation as to who they were and where they came from right there.
Then the state that she was talking about, I happen to have some experience researching in that state and know when they started keeping documents and how, actually, good their record keeping really was. So, I let her know about some of this and she walked away.

But this is just one of the many many wild stories that people come up with to prove their point and then to say that there were no records just seems to prove their points (in their eyes anyway), since there is "NO" way to check up on it.
