Longest walks all have/had good intentions. But they are getting smaller and smaller! Longest Walk II advertised thousands and they were going to demand restitution on the steps of the capitol from the nation's law makers. Prolly about 200 showed up at the finish line and half of them were curious nonIndians wondering what was going on! They rallied across from the capitol in a park were you couldn't even see the capitol. And only one representative came over. The longest walk participants gave the U.S. representative the list of demands. He said thank you and left! Hmmmmm?

Longest Walk IV left from D.C. not too long ago. I don't know of anybody in the D.C. Native Community who even knew of this event! That's sad considering so many Natives work in the D.C. metro area for the BIA, IHS, NCAI, NIEA, NIGA, NIHA, NMAI and 115 other organizations, agencies and area tribes around D.C.

I did some video and photo of LW3, and was able to chat with Dennis Banks a few times. There was a group of Japanese monks on LW3 that were amazing athletes. Dennis spent time in Japan during his military service, and became close to many spiritual leaders.

Dennis had survived a heart attack that he blamed on diabetes. He went on a strict vegetarian diet and improved his health dramatically. Longest Walk 3 was focused upon getting Natives to take action against diabetes.

The LW3 started in Kumeyaay lands of San Diego, I covered the start at request of my friends over here.

Then, I ended up on assignment out in AZ and met up with the LW3 walkers & runners on the Tohono O'odham rez in Sells, AZ. I filmed their progress over to the Pascua Yaqui Tucson rez, and we met again at the San Xavier District of Tohono O'odham Nation.

We had a couple of meals together, people were Lakota, Mexican, Red Lake, Leech Lake, a couple of hippies, a few Japanese monks, Kumeyaay, Quechan (Kwatsaan) and a few others. All had lost weight, gained strength & endurance, and were very "tan" DARK from being on the roads all day.

I flew out to the Baltimore American Indian Center to meet the LW3 people at a powwow held in their honor after they had reached Washington D.C.

As you mentioned, it seemed the LW3 did not draw much attention in D.C. There had been plans for a powwow on the National Mall, but it never materialized, so the victory powwow was held in Baltimore instead.

Everybody was healthy and happy, some had lost over 50 pounds. You don't have to walk across the USA, just walk around your rez each day you can, and eat right for your metabolism.

Since this LW4 is ending in San Francisco area, I will plan on being up around Northern California to get some footage, probably more on rural settings or rez before they reach San Fran bay.
