Lumbee student moves to next round in American Idol
Tuesday, February 24, 2004

Charly Lowry, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, has advanced to the next round in the American Idol competition.

Lowry, 20, plans to sing an Aretha Franklin song tonight, according to USA Today. Her strategy to winning over tough judges like Simon Crowell? "Just be Charly, just be Charly."

Lowry mentioned she was a member of the tribe in her first appearance on the show.

Not an idol yet

Charly Lowery didn't do much to "win over judges" tonight. Randy Jackson liked her Southern drawl, but that was about it. Paula Abdul liked her and Simon Cowell seemed to think Lowery's performance was O.K. But, Jackson and Abdul gave a standing ovation to Latoya London and Cowell said London's performance and singing were "outstanding."

Latoya London gave the only stellar performance tonight out of the eight contestants. The seven others looked and sounded like amateurs.
