Unhappy Lumbees Seeking Gaming?

It would appear that our people (a very small minority of our them, 13 Tribal Council members and the ex-Chariman) have signed the Lumbee into a secretive and rather lucritive contract for possible gaming.

This is the article from the Fayetteville Observer:

http://www.fayobserver.com/Articles/2010/04/18/991770

Here is another article from the Winstom-Salem Journal:

Contract risks Lumbee assets

I attended that Tribal Council Meeting on Thursday, April 15, 2010 and was very upset at what I heard and how some of the council treated the people.

I know many Tribes have gaming and it has created many new problems and issues for them - some good and some bad.

For some reason, I feel bad about this contract for our people.

It is my opinion that they have now made us go backwards - sure we hadn't achieved recognition yet but it was closer than having to start all over. My grandfather worked hard for it and now all his work was for nothing. They are having someone that nobody knows and that the tribe has to go into debt to pay seeking recognition for us. Those people could care less about us, they are just concerned that they want a casino. At least that is what I get from everything. Of course, I am out of the area and only know what I read and what my family/friends tell me. But all in all I think they are hurting us not helping us!

wow... talk about counting your chickens before they hatch! And that penalty payment if you guys don't get the recognition.... that's pretty gutsy of your council!! I guess we know who's hides will be nailed to the shed if things don't work out huh?

Gaming will force recognition: there'd be too much critique about disvowing the "community" an opportunity to enhance their standing via capitalism.

Many blessings to the Lumbee Nation and I hope they receive federal recognition. I know that gaming provides much needed income. Then again I know that gamning usually provides lot of unwanted activity for the community as well. But anyway, many blessings to the People.
