Native community honors mother of Native teen
Monday, November 8, 2004

The Native community in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, presented eagle feathers and blankets to the mother and a friend of Neil Stonechild, a Cree teen whose death has been linked to police officers.

Stella Bignell and Jason Roy, Stonechild's friend, were honored at a ceremony on Friday. Both gave testimony in government's inquiry into Stonechild's death, with Roy saying he saw Stonechild being placed in the back of a police squad car.

The inquiry found that two police officers picked up Stonechild the night he was last seen alive. Bruises found on his body were likely caused by police handcuffs, the inquiry said.

There was an announcement today that the 2 police officers connected to this case - the ones who are believed to be the last to see Neil Stonechild alive - have been dismissed from the force. A good call from the police chief!

Those young men must have been very courageous to do something like that. It is tragic many of our people die in senseless ways. I work in Federal Corrections and would like to know why the police officers were not even charged criminally. At the very least it should have been criminal negligence causing death.

I had to wonder the same.. being suspended from the force just isnt good enough I think these men need to be charged and pay thier penalty for taking a life... Police these days never take responsibility for anything they think they are above the law and if it was enough for the Chief of Police to suspend them then why not charge them...
Too much of that happens with the Native communities our people are not regarded as human beings and we have lost too many by the hands of the people who claim to protect and serve us, the public. Im just sad that my Sister and her Husband work for this police force and wonder what they themsleves are doing to stop this kind of behaviour from thier colleagues..

My prayers are with the families and friends Of Neil StoneChild...and hope that Justice will be served, full Justice..
