Non-recognized Virginia tribes welcome NMAI opening
Thursday, September 16, 2004

One of the tribes featured in an opening exhibition at the new National Museum of the American Indian is the non-federally recognized Pamunkey Tribe from Virginia.

The tribe lives on one of the first-ever reservations established in the United States. Chief William P. Miles, who is also an administrator for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, says the tribe was "flattered and honored" to be part of the museum.

Other non-recognized tribes from the area are excited as well. Virginia's tribes will hold a welcoming reception on Monday, September 20, the day before the opening.
