Hundreds Mourn Loss of Students

Saturday, March 26, 2005

RED LAKE, Minn. With the bang of a drum and a high-pitched wail, the first funerals began Saturday for victims of the shootings on the Red Lake Indian Reservation (search) in which 10 people died.

A lone man's sad cry gave way to songs and more drumming from a circle of a dozen men, and hundreds of people who had gathered in a community center filed past a pair of open caskets.

Daryl Lussier, 58, a tribal police officer, and his longtime companion Michelle Sigana, 31, were the first victims in Monday's attack by his grandson, Jeff Weise (search), 16.

Lussier, dressed in his police uniform, had an eagle feather placed in his hands. In his casket were an American flag, a teddy bear, a few cigarettes and his police badge. In Sigana's casket was a ceramic dish filled with cigarettes.

More than 100 police officers attended the five-hour service for Lussier and Sigana, along with Gov. Tim Pawlenty (search) and U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman.

In brief remarks, Pawlenty alluded to Red Lake's reputation as a place of poverty. Wealth is not measured in the value of a home, he said, but in the strength of communities and families.

"Even in grief, I can see that the Red Lake Nation is one of Minnesota's wealthiest places," he said.

After killing the pair in their home on the northern Minnesota reservation, Weise went to Red Lake High School, where authorities say he killed five students, a teacher and a security guard before shooting himself.

A third funeral, for 15-year-old Chase Lussier, was planned Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

While investigators say they don't know Weise's motive, a long trail of Internet postings paint a picture of a deeply depressed, suicidal boy. Friends and family members have said he had been taking the anti-depressant Prozac since a suicide scare last summer.

Outside the Red Lake community center, which shares space with a casino, an electronic sign flashed a message: "Red Lake Nation sends heartfelt condolences to all family members of tragic event. We are one in our sorrow and in our love."

On Saturday, President Bush made his first public comments on the shooting, praising a security guard credited with saving some students by confronting Weise. Bush said he and first lady Laura Bush were praying for the victims.

The Red Lake school is not expected to reopen until next month.

It was the worst U.S. school shooting since the April 1999 rampage at Columbine High School in Colorado, which ended in the deaths of 12 students, a teacher and the two teen gunmen.

Traditional rites for school shooting victims

Ojibwe rite intended to prepare soul for afterlife

BEMIDJI, Minnesota (AP) -- Three victims of the Red Lake High School shooting will have traditional Ojibwe funeral, intended to prepare the soul for a four-day journey into the afterlife.

The ceremonies, not freely discussed with outsiders, often includes a "spirit dish" to nourish the departing soul and rouge for a blush on the cheeks of the beloved.

The other six victims and the shooter will be remembered with Christian-based services that will have some elements of Ojibwe tradition. Three of the Christian-based funerals were scheduled for Saturday.

Authorities say 16-year-old Jeff Weise shot to death five students, a security guard and a teacher Monday at the high school on Red Lake Indian reservation, then killed himself. Earlier, he shot to death his grandfather and the man's girlfriend. They said they don't know what motivated Weise to shoot.

Thurlene Stillday, Chanelle Rosebear and Dewayne Lewis, all age 15, will be laid to rest in Ponemah, a deeply traditional community on the reservation where many families bury the dead in their yards.

"Ponemah has ... a long tradition of having their own Ojibwe faith and religion," said Kevin Cease, director of the Bemidji funeral home handling the arrangements for all of the victims. "For them, that's their roots."

Tribal members involved in the Ponemah services would not describe details. Tribal elder Larry Stillday said the practices can only be appreciated by seeing them.

"The depth of it is way beyond a conversation with somebody," he said.

Pipes, drums and rattles often are used to direct the departing soul and sing instructions, said Anton Treuer, assistant professor of Ojibwe languages at the American Indian Resource Center at Bemidji State University.

Sage is used to cleanse the thoughts of the survivors so their minds are not clouded by anger and sadness, Treuer said.

"It's really comforting because you have a sense that this person is getting somewhere," he said.

Instructions given to the departed are not supposed to be shared with the living, because doing so would be like sending a living person into the afterlife, Treuer said.

"This is something that has never been recorded on video or audiotape -- even by the people who try to learn how to perform (the funerals)," Treuer said.

Though there is grief at these ceremonies, Treuer said it is different than the grief one might find at a Christian service.

"(Loved ones) let them go to where they have to go," he said.

The ceremonies include a feast, which is shared with the departed. A spirit dish is sometimes placed in the casket. Families also sometimes include small items that will help the soul on the journey, such as a fire-starter kit or small spoon, Treuer said.

Also, Treuer said, rosy cheeks are painted on the face of the departed, showing that the soul will be happy when it meets its lost loved ones.

The official name of the Red Lake band is the Red Lake Band of Chippewa. Chippewa and Ojibwe are variations of the same word, with Ojibwe more often used to describe languages and customs; some related tribes elsewhere in Minnesota and Canada also use Ojibwe in their official name.

OK.. Personally I DO NOT agree with blaming such incidents on Music , Movies, theatre, fashion style.. nothing of that kind.. rather i blame the people that continued to turn a blind eye.

When Did this kid start dressing goth... from what I understand it was AFTER his father did what he did and AFTER his mother ended up in her vegetated state... Young kids these days are gonna turn to the darkside.. they ALL go thru that phase of dressing in black tryin to cut the world out thinking if they dress in black they can just disappear... the music just agrees with thier feelings.. thats where they get the validation concerning thier feelings and thoughts.. I also feel safe in sayin there are MANY that still dress goth into adult hood... but for sum reason that STYLE of fashion has been deemed to be that of rebels, mental people, people with serious issues... So if that were SO true than why are some of the MOST intelligent GOTH?? I know alot of Goth people and Ill tell ya they have minds like philosophers... they make ya think and I can say they are prolly the most truthful and down to earth people, Just becasue they choose to dress different and listen to heavy music doesnt make them bad and THAT my friends is where the problem lyes!!! It lyes within in the judgement and fear of something that is Different than your own...

Wasnt that what caused the Assimilation OF Natives in the first place?? Was that the Euros couldnt accept our own beliefs, thoughts, ideas and YES even our fashion sense... they became judgemental and instead of trying to learn about us and understand they got scared and ran in the other direction while at the same time taking away our identitiy
(Of course the process had lots to do with resource finding too but...)

Dressing in GOTH doesnt make you a killer its the everyday harassment towards GOTH or that of difference that causes one to become angry and render bad thoughts which in turn end up in tragidies like this if not dealt with...

Yes I would say that kind of behaviour would make you raise an eyebrow SO if it does than youre being sent a signal... a signal that may mean HELP!! So ASK!!!!!

Another Angle

For some time, there have been warnings out about giving
teenagers antidepressant drugs--Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro,
Celexa, etc.--they are said to have exactly the opposite
effect of what they are supposed to do. They can cause
suicidal, and apparently, sometimes, homicidal, emotions in
teens. I am wondering if this was another example of a
drug given to a teen doing exactly the opposite of what was
supposed to do.

Im afraid that troubled youth on my reserve might see the Red Lake shootings and copy the events.
We are all the same people and to see this tragedy has the potential to bring us togethor in a good way and even in a bad way.
talk to your kids, show em you love them. We can all work to avoid ths tragic event from happening again.

good comment .... i just would like to add .... that all the youngsters need to treat each other with respect, everyone does not like the same music or wear the same styles of clothing ... but they still deserve respect. our youngsters need unity and they need to reach out to the ones they see that are troubled ( and this also goes for most adults also ).

this thing really hurts my heart, i will keep red lake and all people in my prayers
