Senate panel backs recognition of Virginia tribes
Monday, May 10, 2004

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee last week adopted a report supporting the federal recognition of six Virginia tribes.

The report says the tribes "are, and always have been, Indian tribes warranting acknowledgment by the federal government." It was adopted with one dissent.

The report accompanies a bill the panel approved that would recognize the Chickahominy, the Chickahominy Eastern Division, the Monacan, the Nansemond, the Rappahannock, and the Upper Mattaponi tribes. The tribes are some of the oldest state-recognized tribes in the nation.

Just a thought

Since the Eastern Cherokee have gone on the record to oppose Lumbee recognition, since the argument has been that their bill circumvents the process, it also should oppose this bill and one involving "tribes" in South Carolina.
Not that I agree a whole lot with Lumbeedancer, but just to show that the Eastern Band isn't singling them out, the tribe should come out against this one too.

Boy, is this good news. This is something that I've been waiting to hear for a long time. Hopefully, I'll see it before I die.

So they should oppose these tribes, just to save face? :Eyebrows

Also, maybe they should have gone on record opposing the 15 to 20 (not sure exact number) tribes who allready recieved congressional recognition since the establishment of the BIA route?

It's a little late for them to start trying to be all fair now, don't you think? :dontknow:
