The Six Nations Polytechnic hall was packed with over 300 residents when the
band council called for an update on its land’s “exploratory talks” that
are aimed at settling two claims. The heated meeting sent a message to the
band council, don’t sell off any land. Elected Chief Dave General came under
attack with calls for impeachment after he refused to support the Caledonia “
reclamation”. (Photo by Lynda Powless)
Check here later for up to the minute details!
Headlines

Watch for updates on Caledonia "reclamation"
ALERT: Confederacy Council has entered into talks with Six Nations Band
Council Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Province of Ontario along with
the Haldimand Mayor and OPP. Talks began Wednesday and continue today . INAC
has offered to provide funding to the Six Nations Band Council to travel up
and down the Grand River educating councils, groups and organizations about
the Six Nations claim to the Grand River, provide funding for lands research
and a new "real estate" type office to work with developers along the Grand.
The Confederacy Council is demanding the OPP be called off the people at the
site and discussions on who owns the land open. Today Ontario Minister of
Indian Affairs D. Ramsey said he is willing to look at compensating the
developer and contractors. It was one of the suggestions the Confederacy Council
made to Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice. So far INAC has not agreed to
open land discussions with the Confederacy Council, only the elected council.
More later today..

Turtle Island News
Tempers and criticism flared and at least one local resident called for
the impeachment of elected chief Dave General at a public meeting
here last week. Hundreds of local residents lashed out at elected Chief
David General for his handling of Six Nations land claims during a meeting meant
to explain where band council was in its talks with federal and provincial
officials. The talks are aimed at the eventual settlement of the Port
Maitland lands and trust monies lost under a former Superintendent of Indian
Affairs.. General said a community referendum will decide the eventual settlement
of two claims now under going the “exploratory” process between band council’
s lawyer and federal and provincial officials. _More._

_New Tory ethics plan gives auditing
power over native reserves_
(http://www.theturtleislandnews.com/s...be/index2.html)
OTTAWA (CP) _ The Conservative government will grant new powers
to allow the auditor general to scrutinize the way aboriginal communities
spend federal cash, The Canadian Press has learned.
A government source said that new task for the auditor general will be
included in omnibus ethics legislation the Tories intend to introduce next
week.
The official, who asked not to be identified, said the new stipulation in
the Federal Accountability Act will be groundbreaking.
In fact, aboriginal groups have long complained they are over-audited.
But existing auditing requirements do not allow the auditor general to
examine their books and determine whether taxpayers are getting value
for money.
Auditor General Sheila Fraser blew the lid open on the sponsorship scandal
by exposing the apparent waste and murky paper trails in the Public
Works Department.
She complained at the time, however, that she could not access the books
of private companies like Groupaction that received the federal cash.
Government sources say their new legislation will allow her to follow the
money into non-government entities- including aboriginal communities.

_Caledonia Rally:
“So we can shoot them” a resident in crowd yells_
(http://www.theturtleislandnews.com/s...be/index2.html)

Hagersville lawyer Andrew
McCarthy claims Six Nations
surrendered land
By Donna DuricWriter
CALEDONIA-“So we can shoot them when?”
That’s the question one man in Caledonia asked in front of hundreds of
people and at least a dozen reporters during a rally attended by townspeople
protesting the Six Nations occupation of the Douglas Creek subdivision on Hwy. 6.
Andrew McCarthy finished telling the crowd that Six Nations doesn’t really
have title to the land being occupied. Caledonia resident Jamie McMaster,
owner of Norton Construction, along with other homeowners in the area,
organized the rally to protest the occupation, which is now in its sixth week. Six
Nations protesters say they are reclaiming land that is part of the 900,000
acre Haldimand Tract, a parcel of land six miles wide on either side of the
Grand River granted to them in 1784 by the crown for their allegiance during
the American War of Independence._More._

Is this how we are going to win the support of the american people or canadian people? If all the sioux started returning to south dakota and started buying land piece by piece it would be a better way than this. Kinda how the jews bought back palestine before 1948 little pieces at a time.
There is supposedly over 100,000 sioux since less than third actually live on reservations, why dont the rest start building little communities here and there in south dakota making room for others to return and buy more property. Combining incomes building businesses, supporting only indian owned business over white establishments, recruiting financial support from various sources for various projects and having lots more indian babies and overtime south dakota would be a dominate sioux state.

Think its far fetched 2 other communities do this extremely well jews and mennonites. It would take a community effort not just individuals.

What are you talking about GAche? How is that relevent to what's going on with this protest? This is'nt a matter of REGAINING land.. it's a matter of someone saying they bought it when it was never sold.

Semantics doesnt matter blackbear they have it we want it back. We wont get it back any other way than buying little pieces at a time and whatever we can get in an occasional court victory. Stop smoking weed blackbear we are not going to get our land back when there are white people living on it unless we buy it from them.

I really really hope so.... I pray every day for every indian nation and their success. I do want to see the whole six nations reunited in their homeland with properly condoled chiefs by clan mothers.

Gache, we are in our homelands. The reason that Six Nations reserve is there though is because of the revolutionary war. Tyendinaga led the mohawks to fight for the British and when the Americans won, those that fought for the brits went to the canadian side to live in fear of persecution of which did happen. But there have always been Mohawks on either side of what is known as the American/Canadian border. Other members of the six nations went there as well. The tuscarora divided at that time with those that fought with the brits going to grand river and those that fought with the americans settling in western NY.

And we do have our properly condoled Chiefs.. but the reserves in Canada also have imposed band councils. I know it can be very confusing about who's ligit and who's not.. The only two reserves now that have a traditional government only and no band council are Tuscaroras and Onondagas.

At 5 a.m. this morning, the Ontario Provincial police moved on the defenders of the land. I have no clue as to what is happening, other than that.

They went back!!!! After being arrested this morning, hundreds of Haudenosaunee regained the land in question.

Right now, there are fires burning on a couple of major roads in the area. All roads in the Caledonia area are closed.

More later.

I get CHCH news on cable. Coupla my nephews have gone there to support. I'm going tomorrow.

Mohawks of Tyendinaga have blocked a CN rail track in that community.

Kiw... Take a camera or cameras... video, digital.. whatever and make sure you take photos... as I understand it, there's only like 16-20 people at the site at one time most of the time and if they are bringing in 1000 police ... well you catch my drift.

Interesting that there are no other newspapers mentioning anything.

So far I have written to MSNBC, Dateline, Newsweek, Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, and Oprah (it's my wifes, it was saved under favorites ).

Anyways, I thought if we could get more of us writing to the news media, we could get more coverage.

Here are some links I found helpful:

Okay, wow I live so close to this protest and you have to experience it. Seeing it on TV is nothing like being there and watching and going 'wow this is real it's really happening.' The O.P.P moved in around 4:30 in the morning on Thursday, arresting 16 people, 4 were charged and released. Many natives have been abused and tasered, had guns pointed at them. As for the railway block in Tyendinaga it has been voluntarily taken down due to having to bus people from Toronto, Montreal & Kingston, etc. Last night atleast 1000 people we're down at the protest, aboriginals and non-aboriginals had came out to support this stand off. There were tire fires, highway 6, part of 6th line was closed, unity road from the hamilton airport we're closed because of sightings of the R.C.M.P. they are expected to come in soon. Now, the people of Caledonia are meeting on the north side. Well, I guess this is all I can say or remember right now! If you want to know anything just ask.

Ki, let me know if your coming down!

GAWD! Thank you Summer!! First hand accounts is what I think all of us really want to hear. Also... don't get to close to the tire fires hon.. my cousin got mercury poisoning from the neighbor burning his tires and it wafting over into her house. And for the smart alecs who are asking why the natives are wearing masks.. that's probably why! Duh!

Caledonia Residents Protest Indian Blockade

500 non-natives rush OPP barrier

Crowd jeers while police ask for calm

Apr. 25, 2006. 05:10 AM
PETER EDWARDS
STAFF REPORTER

CARLOS OSORIO/TORONTO STAR Protesting Caledonia residents
are seen through a line of OPP officers separating the crowd and the Mohawks´
barricade.

CALEDONIA, Ont. - Shouts of "Coward!", "Who pays your salary?" and "Do your
job" could be heard as a mob of 500 non-native residents fed up with an
Indian blockade of Highway 6 rushed a line of police officers last night.
Furious crowd members, fired up from a community meeting held at the local
fairground, were in an ugly mood as they marched toward the blockade.
They jeered about 75 OPP officers who stood shoulder to shoulder across the
highway between the mob and the barricade for at least three hours, and
yelled at police: "Open the road."
Many waved Canadian flags and sang "O Canada" in between hurling racial
taunts at about 100 Mohawks gathered at their barricade a block away.
A group of non-natives attacked a police car with kicks after one man in the
crowd was arrested in the fracas, and OPP officers had to struggle as the
mob pushed them back at least 15 metres.
By midnight the crowd had dispersed, leaving a group of about 60 non-natives
lingering near the site.
Two hours earlier the scene was aggressive and angry as a crowd of more than
3,000 people, a third of the population of Caledonia, gathered to vent their
frustration with the Indians' protest, in its 56th day yesterday, at an
open-air public rally.
One person held a sign reading, "OPP/ RCMP/ Elected Government, Don't forget
who actually pays your salary."
A girl of about 10 waved a placard reading, "I'm a sitting duck protected by
chickens."
OPP Insp. Brian Haggeth told the rally that negotiation would be needed to
achieve a lasting, meaningful resolution.
"My officers are here for the safety of everyone," the inspector said. "We
can get through this time of uncertainty together, safely and proudly."
Moments later, after the crowd sang the national anthem, things got uglier.
Police had to drag a man off a makeshift stage as he shouted, "Cut off their
taxes."
Another man shouted back: "Hate-mongers."
Haldimand County Mayor Marie Trainer attended the mass rally, but did not
speak.
In an interview, she fought back tears as she spoke of the strains tearing
at her community.
"We've got families divided," she said. "We've got friends on both sides of
the issue. We're hurting."
She appealed for Ottawa to step up its efforts to resolve outstanding land
claims with First Nations people.
There was polite applause as rally organizer Jamie McMaster Jr. told the
crowd that he supports the cause of the Mohawks, even though he disagrees with
their methods.
"The situation must be resolved peacefully," McMaster said. "If this is not
kept peaceful, Caledonia will be ruined forever."
Some members of the crowd passed around Canadian flags. Others passed out
leaflets that said Caledonia was "being held hostage by terrorists."
"Who's going to pay for our losses including property values?" the flyer
asked. "They have terrorized a whole community for their political gain!"
Trainer said she thought some of the anger would dissolve if the Mohawkstook
down a barricade on Highway 6 south of the town, blocking traffic past the
construction site.
The barricade was erected Thursday, hours after an early morning raid by the
Ontario Provincial Police in which 16 Mohawks were arrested and charged with
mischief and assaulting police.
Mohawks say police used pepper spray and Tasers on them.
Earlier, Clyde Powless, a spokesperson for Mohawks blockading the highway,
said he welcomed the rally of Caledonia residents.
"It's good," Powless said before the meeting.
"It brings them closer together ... They're saying the same thing I'm
saying: `Wake up, government.'"
"I think it's good," he added. "It's healthy to vent."
The town's six schools were shut down because of the tensions on Friday, but
students returned to classes yesterday.
Meanwhile, no substantive negotiations are expected for two weeks, as
federal and provincial officials have been given that time to assemble bargaining
teams with the power to reach tentative agreements.
One suggestion is to offer a buyout to Henco Industries Ltd., a small local
company whose partially completed Douglas Creek Estates development is now
occupied by a camp of dozens of Mohawks and supporters.
There hasn't been any word about how much money would be offered to the
developer for the 40-hectare patch of land, where sewer lines have been installed
and two houses completed on land that Mohawks say rightfully belongs to
them.
Henco has given out a press release expressing frustration with the slow
pace of talks, and calling for "immediate interim funding."
Leaflets have been passed out for the past several days advertising last
night's meeting, saying it was called by residents: "To voice our anger,
frustration and disappointment with our government and its abandonment of our
community, our safety, our businesses, our property values and our rights as
Canadian citizens."
The meeting wasn't organized by the local county council, but was held in
the parking lot outside the municipal offices.

Province May Compensate Developer

Apr. 25, 2006. 01:00 AM
ROB FERGUSON
QUEEN'S PARK BUREAU

The province is looking at compensation for the Caledonia, Ont., developer
and eight contractors who have been "really hard hit" by the occupation, said
David Ramsay, Ontario's minister for aboriginal affairs.
"We're very sympathetic to what's going on there," he told reporters after
the Legislature's daily question period.
"They are putting their life savings into this development ... we want to
work with them and see what we can do to help."
Ramsay wouldn't specify what type of compensation might be offered. He
wouldn't say whether the province might buy the land in question.
"Right now we're in exploratory discussions so, basically, our officials
will look into that," Ramsay said.
He said other local businesses, such as gas stations, that are feeling a
financial pinch because of the occupation and standoff with police, are not part
of the compensation discussions.
A larger issue is whether people such as the Caledonia developer should be
able to get clear legal title from the courts over land that is the subject of
native land claims, Ramsay acknowledged.

Frustration in Caledonia

Over 2,000 rally against native land protest

By Cheryl Bauslaugh
Local News - Tuesday, April 25, 2006 @ 01:00

Angry Caledonia residents lashed out at politicians and police Monday night
at what was billed as a peaceful community rally.

As organizers urged a crowd of more than 2,000 to support a peaceful
resolution to the land dispute, some residents said they´re sick of being held
hostage by protesters who have shut down the main highway into the town of 10,000.

"Let´s go over and open the road," said an unidentified man.

"It´s been seven weeks -- we´re tired of waiting," said another.

One man who jumped on stage and attempted to grab the microphone was stopped
by police.

Rally organizers Jamie McMaster and Ken Hewitt said they don´t support the
native occupation of a housing development under construction, which began
Feb. 28.

"But we do support their cause," McMaster said. "It needs to be dealt with
immediately.

"

Both urged native protesters to end their illegal occupation of the housing
site and re-open the Highway 6 bypass, which has been blocked since last
Thursday.

"We have had our lives disrupted, our houses devalued, our freedom to move
about curtailed," Hewitt said, as the crowd at the Caledonia fairgrounds
cheered and waved Canadian flags. "We do not want this lawlessness to continue. We
need a resolution now."

While most in the crowd seemed willing to listen to McMaster and Hewitt,
there were boos and cat-calls when Haldimand OPP Inspector Brian Haggith took
the mike.

"Get off your *** and do something," yelled one man in the crowd, referring
to failed police attempts to move the native protesters off the disputed
land.

Haggith urged the crowd to be patient while federal, provincial and native
representatives work out a solution to the impasse.

"Anger, fear and violence will not solve anything," he said.

But many in the crowd say they´re tired of waiting.

"I have nothing against the natives but it´s gone on too long," said Stacey
Birks, who lives in a subdivision right beside Douglas Creek Estates.

Blinking away tears, the mother of three said her children are afraid to go
to school or leave the house. And, her youngest child, who has asthma, has
been sent to stay with his grandparents because of the pollution caused by
burning tires.

"I don´t know what the solution is but it has to be stopped."

Nancy Martinello, who lives 11 houses away from the disputed 57 acres, said
nearby residents have had to put up with ATVs roaring up and down their
streets and masked protesters, carrying sticks and clubs, cutting through their
backyards. Police who were asked to intervene told residents they were "just
there to keep the peace.

"For day after day, we sat there and watched those officers babysitting."

About 40 residents approached native protesters last Friday in an attempt to
resolve the issue. One man, Steve Tong, was allowed to cross the barricade
and talk to native leaders about the concerns of his neighbours. He said the
situation improved immediately but he still wants to see the protesters move
off the land

"They have to let go of Caledonia," he said. "This is not about Caledonia."

In fact, he suggested that talks should be put on hold unless protestors
back down.

"They should be told, We want to see the blockade come down now -- or no
negotiations."
