Statue of Mandan Chief Sheheke dedicated
Tuesday, June 29, 2004

A 12-foot statue of Mandan Chief Sheheke, who helped explorers Lewis and Clark, was dedicated in Washburn, North Dakota, on Sunday.

Sheheke welcomed the Lewis and Clark expedition through what is now North Dakota. He provided food to the crew in the winter of 1804-1805. He later traveled, with his family, to Washington, D.C., at the invitation of Lewis and Clark.

The statue of Sheheke joins ones of Lewis and Clark at the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center.
