Tohono O'odham Nation takes spotlight at DNC
Wednesday, July 28, 2004

The Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona took the spotlight at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.

The night opened with two members who sang the national anthem in the tribal language. The performance by Michael Enis, 19, and Alicia Childs, 20, was broadcast via satellite from the reservation to the convention in Boston.

Later, Tohono O'odham Vice-President Ned Norris spoke to the convention, also via satellite. He talked about his tribe's role in homeland security and of the impacts of living along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The tribe's president, Vivian Juan-Saunders is a delegate to the convention.
