What is most important to you that Whites know about our people?

I want them to know that we will never forget what happened to our people. That we will never forget to honor, their sacrifice, bravery, and hard work. That we are greatful to those who came before us, which is only possible because we chose not to forget!

I want them to know that we can bring it up in conversation, that we can and will, talk about being NDN. That we deserve and demand respect, especially when earned. That we are strong and proud today!

This is but a small example of what I want to know from "YOU".

What frustrates you? What do "they" always seem to miss that you want them to know?

What great things about us do we wish they knew or more of?

What about our culture, would be most important, that they know or learn about, to better understand who and what we are?

What we want from our country and U.S. government.

I would like to, when this is done, share your comments and concerns at two of my children's schools, where Native American history is but a sm. blimp on the radar screen anymore. I further want to compile the information, to have it ready, to use it when it's needed, to educate, and give a platform to Native concerns, for all of us to use!

I want to give the visitors on and off this site some great information about our people and Nations, that they may never hear or know about. So let's tell them, Let's edify each other and lift up our children! This is my wish.

Thank you in advance for your help. Wakopataki

I want them to know that we are not just one single people that all think and believe the same thing, practices a single, codified "Native religion" and has a single language that can be described as "speaking NDN".

We don't even all have the same treaty agreement with the United States or Canada.

I want them to know that we aren't the stereotypes that you'd see on old western movies. We don't all look alike, some of us even have lighter skin and lighter hair.

I want them to know that we weren't "conquered" or the "losers" in a war that didn't exist.

I want them to know that we are people of our word and those treaties we signed back in the day really meant something to us.

I want them to know that no matter what the majority of society has thrown at us or continues to throw at us, it makes us only more determined to stand strong and maintain our traditions and our culture as best we can.

I want them to know that we are doctors, lawyers, construction workers, engineers, craftspeople, stay-at-home moms, astronauts, athletes and musicians.

I want them to see our handiwork and learn that Indians are among the most creative, inventive and gifted folk around.

That's what I'd tell 'em - and that's what I'm teaching my kids, my friends, my white family members and my neighbors about being Indian.

I agree with everything Northofada wrote!

I would also add that I would like the whole story of this country's history taught in the schools not just the colonialism version!

I want them to know...

...that what I am wearing is not a "costume". I know it is what they called it way back when, but I believe that if our ancestors actually knew the meaning of that word they would have chosen something else different to call it.

...that we didn't smoke drugs in our "peace pipe".

...that there are blue eyed NDNs out there.

I will think of some other stuff later.

....besides everything that is written here -

that there are people who are politically ndn (defined by treaties and blood quantums).
that there are people who are culturally ndn (defined by life ways learned in a family setting - and may or may not be politically ndn).
that there are people who are ndn descendents (defined as knowing or finding out that some ancestors were ndn).

Don't confuse being one (especially descendent) as equating to being all 3.

that each ndn people are like a seperate nation. Ask a German if they are a Dane or a Swede (they all look pretty much alike to me :-P ). Three different [european] countries - 3 different nationalities. Same with ndns - Dine are not Ojibwe are not Makah.

Don't ask me about THE (in capital letters and pronounced THEE) ndn religion. You were given a way to talk to the Creator - a way that works best for your people. There is no one single way among ndns - we each have been given our own way and for most everyone I know it is intensely personal and not meant to be shared outside of the people it was given to.

there is other stuff but my time is limited today. I might be back.

Lightbulb I Want Them To Know....

Before they get too wrapped up in "White Guilt" and feel sorry for folks.....Realize they are pawns in the chess game as well....Actually their strings are much easier to pull....They buy into "The System" In most cases they can't fall back on certain particulars.....Easy prey if you will....I like to call it the; "Mindless Masses Syndrome"

By the way....."The Revolution will not be Televised...."

Cool What I Believe

I want non-Indians, I say non-Indians because:

Blacks,Hispanic/Latino,Asian,Middle-Eastern,et cetera don't know a damn thing about us either. If you assume just because some other person of color knows about us just by default of them being of color, you're wrong and sadly mistaken.

With that said:

I want them to know that it was the Iroquois Confederacy in which the US Constitution was directly based.

And that Chief Skenandoah organized the feeding/rescue of Washington's troops at Valley Forge when they would have all starved to death.

I'll post more, just needed to get that one out

I had this conversation today, as it always seems to be brought up.

I want them to know that Casinos don't make up for the past.

That every Tribe or Nation does not have one and that many still live in poverty.

That, that's not OK, especially in this day and time.

That to be an NDN, does not mean that your drunk, lazy, or on drugs.

I want them to know that our culture has much to offer and that the "Old One's" were not Savages, but people protecting their way of life and Mother Earth.

It always seems that the same things are said when Whites talk about an NDN. I wish that they leave the stereotyping at the door and take a deeper look. I know they would be surprised at what they see.

Lightbulb Different Perspective....

Before we get to wrapped up in it...lets focus on our own.....Cause the crab in the barrel mentality is alive and well....

I will try to translate that, though I thought it was pretty plain. We should focus on our own, and not worry about what the hell others think. The 'crab in a barrel' is a metaphor....when crabs are bunched in a box/bucket/barrel whatever, and one tries to escape by climbing up, the others pull him (it?) back down. This has become an expression for how some groups of people treat their members whenever one tries to 'climb out' of their situation, be it poverty, or whatever.

I agree with you and at the same time I am trying to let those that will listen, hear from those who haven't always had the opportunity to speak.

My children, whom this is for, want to talk about being NDN, giving voice to things that most have never heard before. They want to tell history from a different perspective and show their pride. They want others to know about the diversity of our Nations and people. They have faced ingorant people which can be hard. But most of all they want to hear from you, what you think is important.

It's the diversity amongst us, in experience and living that would help with this. I know that many of your experiences would be new to me and maybe vice versa.

I think it's a priviledge to hear from you. The intention is to share and learn and teach, even if it's just our children.

This has really been a good thread for my white self. First, let me say that the things you've all noted are things I HAVE learned by listening to you on this site and others, but of course, most non-Indians don't visit these sites and listen to you. I especially agree with those of you who've wanted to see education among non-Indians improved so that there is more of what you want non-Indians to know. There is a project called Cradleboard (www.cradleboard.org) , which someone on another site put me on to, which works to get better education out to non-Indians. I'm working with someone in my area to try to get the board of education to look into this seriously - it's a tough sell in these days of budget crunching. But maybe there are other ideas - like, what if you were to write a letter to a non-Indian elementary school student about what you'd like them to know about Indians- what would you say? What things about your life now would you describe? What incidents from your nation's history would you talk about? Would one of the writers on the board be interested in developing a children's book from letters from various people? Just thinking out loud, wishing that the things I've read in this thread could go out to a broader non-Indian audience.
