Texas Hunting

I'm from south central Texas and I do not hunt nor do I necessarily agree with the way they are hunted. On the other hand, I know that in this area the white tail deer do not have many natural predators and they tend to reproduce like rats. As a result they are not that big and due to the numbers they are hunted through deer leases and which are strictly controlled and monitored by the state. I also know the meat not used by any type of hunting is donated to charities and food banks.

We can always send you down some of our wolf population. ;)

Up here we count on winter kill to cull the deer, elk and moose. Last witer was brutal for winter kill but this year, not so bad... we'll see a lot of twins this birthing season. We could send you some winter too... ;)

When the deer population is OVER-protected, the danger of deer disease epidemic becomes a concern. Natural predators kill the sick and slow animals, which prevents the spreading of disease through the deer population.

Nature understands checks and balances better than mankind's political thinkers.

The work of Govt should be to monitor and PROTECT our natural resources, and recommend the proper amount of legitimate kill permits.

None of the kill should be wasted. We have too many senior citizens eating canned pet food because it is all they can afford. Hunters just need to check for Food Pantries in their local churches, or community centers, they have freezers and they know the needy people in town.

Good points AK but the sharing of game meats comes with its own regulations. Most hunters dress and butcher their own kill and the government food and safety folks say when that happens, you are not allowed to share, give or make available to the public, any of the meat done that way. If you want to give your meat away, a hunter would have to take it to a butcher that specializes in wild game. That's not cheap.

I remember at law school, we wanted to put on an Aboriginal Student's display and serve up bannock and moose stew. The uni was ok with it, the public health people were not ok with it. You can't serve wild game meat to the public - has to be farmed meat - which is why anytime you see elk, bison or deer on a menu it's farmed meats.

We had a rather big law case a few years ago where the hunter butchered his own meat and then gave it to a few neighbours because they were going through tough times. F&W and Public health nailed him for dozens of violations to the Fish and Game act and food safety. It's seems it's ok to have your own butcher set up but you can't give away or sell your meat that is prepared by yourself.

It's these types of rules (although in some areas where there is disease in the herds... chronic wasting, brucelliosis etc it's good that you simply can't dispose of this meat to just anyone) that make it easy for hunt farms, outfitters and poachers to waste the meat.

We got dumped on yesterday... drifts are almost topping the 6' fences, got to watch the critters don't make a dash for it... calving season just took on a new challenge, got to go dig out the baby bisons and their mammas.

This is how I advise folks from the southern US to drive up here in the snow... pretend it's white mud.

In Texas there's the Hunters for the Hungry Program. You can bring your dressed, but not butchered, deer to a participating meat processor. For a nominal fee (around $40) they'll butcher the meat and give it to participating food pantries, etc..

http://tacaa.org/hunters-for-the-hungry/

I don't know what the law is down here about giving your dressed/butchered game meat away to individuals. With other foodstuffs you can do pretty much whatever you want as long as your operation is very small scale and you don't charge for it.

But if I had extra meat and knew someone who was hungry, I'd give it to them anyway - legal or not. Just tell 'em to shush and don't talk about it. What the State or Feds don't know...

Sheesh, all some hunters get is a hat for the hide up here... that food program would be good for up here.

I remember a few years ago some politican wanted to feed the welfare folks and inmates all the road kill from the highways. He didn't get re-elected. Wonder why?

What a coincedence. Don't know where to put it but...

my hair colors which I have like that for some weeks now looks like
what I came across yesterday.

Lightening's sister's fur
