Buffalo Dance Songs

In another thread I found an article written by Dennis Zotigh on the Gourd Dance. In the article, I noticed the following, "A series of Buffalo Dance songs must follow immediately after the last Gourd Dance song is sung. This also follows Kiowa protocol."

So this brings up many questions for me as I've seen and heard of things done many different ways. I understand that the term "last Gourd Dance song" really applies not to the last song of a Gourd Dance session, but to the last song for the weekend, celebration, powwow, etc. I've seen them sung after a single session if the powwow was a one day deal and there was to be only one set, but I've also seen them not sung. I've also heard that these Buffalo Dances songs are really traditionally to be sung at the end of the major events such as around July 4th for the Kiowa Gourd Clan or Kiowa Tia Piah Society.

I don't know too much about Buffalo Dance songs, so I don't know how many there are still being sung, but is there kind of a "standard set" which are proper to sing? How many songs might be in such a set? It seems from my experience that most Buffalo Dance songs only go through about 2 pushes is that pretty standard? It also seems that maybe 3 songs are used, at least one with words.

Finally, the question that really got me trying to find something in the archives in the first place, are these Buffalo Dance songs generally Kiowa songs? I ask because I was recently listening to some recordings I had and someone was talking about one of the songs and while the recording was very noisy with the MC and all, it sounded like one of the songs was the property of or about a Ponca Society. And while I'd heard the recording many times, it suddenly struck me that it was "odd" for lack of a better word, that a Ponca song might follow a Kiowa dance.

Anything anyone would wish to share to help me better understand this aspect of the Gourd Dance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

diff'ernt strokes....

Down south of I-40 in OKlahoma I always saw buffalo done after "Charlie Brown" but up around Ponca country my Ponca uncle always told me that Buffalo should follow Snake. He always sings 4 songs and always in the same order, so that's how I sing 'em too. Does anyone know the origin of these buffalo dance songs? I know the omaha have similar sounding songs to the kiowa and ponca ones I hear in oklahoma.

Here's one for ya'

Carnegie Park, Kiowa Gourd Clan 2009. AWESOME!!!! The fellowship, the heat, the laughing, and all the families(y). The Holy Spirit was with us all weekend, especially when it rained, talk about the grandfathers and grandmothers coming to visit, "whoa buddy". And the singing, wow, from the git-go. Uncle Charlie and the family, then No Shame and his family. That "49" Friday night, if you weren't there, you missed IT! For those that were there, it was a true blessing to hear those songs, sung the way they were meant to be sung. Thursday night's "9" was pretty good, but Friday night's "9" session-we will live on that one for a long, long time. Maybe it was a good thing the rain cancelled out the Oh-ho-ma session for Saturday night, we may have just lifted right off the ground. See ya' next year.

farmer,

I heard it was really special this year. My mom went. On the night of the fourth, I couldn't stop thinking about what was happening at The Gourd Clan celebration.

I heard there were almost 30 tipis and over 100 camps! Over 120 male gourd dancers, the bugle was blaring and the drum singing at a feverish pace!

I sure am homesick.

I can't tell you the last time I sang some Gourd Dance songs in public....January maybe?

Well if you didn't make it to the Kiowa Gourd Clan this year you just missed one of the best to say the least! Talk about some very spiritual singing all three days! Even though it rained which is a blessing too! So we still sung the final four and the Pah-goon-gauh too! I got to eat at three different family camps and still had room to eat when it was all over! Haw sole haw!

Kiowa Gourd Clan celebration was outstanding this year! I was told the other night that there were 145 names on the rations list. Which means there were probably about 120 camps. LOL.
The singing, as always, was superb. My family bought our way back into the arena on the 2nd. A bittersweet moment for me, as it was due to the loss of my father. His loss was especially apparent at the end of the evening, when we would retire to the camp for water replenishment, Advil and story time. The family stories, the family history, the war stories, the gossip, the jokes.... It is always my favorite time.
Dancing on the 4th is always my favorite time in the arena. The trophies are present, the bugler blowing his horn, the smoke that fills the campground from the local fireworks shows, and this year, just to add to the feeling of frenzied emotion, there was lighning strikes in the distance and thunder claps, like our ancestors were gourd dancing in Heaven. It was an overwhelming feeling that made me feel humble and pitiful on the one hand, and on the other hand, made me feel confident and strong in my place in this world.
Can't wait until next year!
