Josi,

Yup, it's true.

To the best of my knowledge the 2 Kiowa Tiah Piah societies have shared this dance with other organizations as well.

In addition the Cheyenne StarHawk Society has also shared their version of this dance with organizations in NM.

Anybody know if the Comanche have passed this on to others?

Josi,

Heck, I don't know. . . It wasn't me! *L

I have two good friends (Archie Mason and Johnny Red Eagle) who are active Osage Gourd Dance Society members. Perhaps I can ask them (In a non threatening way *L) when I see them?

I've been told a story about this WhoMe from a member of the Osage tribe, I'll try to PM it to you, it's not my place in my opinion, not being Osage, to post it here publicly.

"Injun Joe" Provost, Omaha, now passed, told me that he "gourd danced" at home, in Macy. He said that in English, his people called it the gourd dance, but it was unrelated to the ways and methodology of the Kiowa gourd dance.

LWB,

I was recently reading the program from last summers Kiowa Gourd Clan. Inside the program it stated that the Otoe-Missouria tribe was the only tribe that the Kiowa Gourd Clan gave permission to dance.

When you sit on the bench at many gourd dances around Oklahoma you hear many a story...

This pass summer i heard the story about the Otoe-Missouria tribe given permission to dance the Gourd Dance
My understanding this was done in the 1920's and it was trade for some songs that the Otoes taught the Kiowas...

In the early 1960s, I was at the Ponca Powwow, and one morning, about sunrise, the Otoes had a brush dance, starting at the south edge of the campground and moving slowly northward to the "South Arena".

Now that would be a sight that would stay with you for your whole life...
I love the brush dance and when we brush dance during our annual it is my personal favorite!
