Question Gourd Dancing Styles

Gourd dancing styles vary from individual to individual.

Some men dance very dignified and respectful.

Some barely move except for their gourds.

Some "follow the leader" in a syncronized line.

Some dance close to the drum and shake their gourd like they are gonna bless the drum with their gourd.

Some jump as they dance.

Some couldn't keep time with their gourds if their life depended on it.

Some look like they are afraid and look around to see what others are doing.

Some shake their heads like they have a Fancy Dance Rocker on.

Some look like they are stalking the drum and dance in a zig-zag.

Some get the hibidy-jibidys and shake all their body parts.

Some dance so crazy that it makes your eyes roll backward. *L

How do you dance?
How do the majority of dancers dance in your area?

How about the ones that bless everyone with their turkey wing fan and their softball size Gourd?

I like to find a real stoic one and dance next to them. Try to talk to them during the dances or at least I mean between the songs.

Some cross their gourd and fan in front of them and look like they're trying to ward off a Vampire.

Some jump side ways left and then right, then jump completely around in a circle.

Some just lift their heels up in time to the beat.

We sure get a kick out of watching all the antics of the Gourd dancers when we go to the Gathering.

From the responses so far, there are several "unusual" ways that individuals gourd dance.

Is there a right way and wrong way to gourd dance?

I know, huh? I seen some gourd dancers who think they are fancy dancing. LOL.. I try to dance in a dignified and respectful way. I do my best to dance along with the drum beat. Sometimes though, when a certain song that I like is sang, I can get a little..... overcome with excitement. When I hear the bugle down in Carnegie, makes me want to go out on a raiding party..lol.
To answer your second question, you only have to look at your first statement. Dancing styles vary from individual to individual. At least, that is what my experience has been...Thanks...

Some stand on the outer part of the circle and never move just facing the drum
some move out into the circle and slowly move around

Me I like using the whole arena, move around
Talk and shake hands

and dance

Dance with the beat of the song
When I first started gourd dancing, I was a little hesitant in my movement but I have always been able to keep beat with the drum. Not being raised in a native environment, I felt intimidated around the other dancers. Not wanting to embarrass myself or my family, I tried not to draw attention to myself. I have been dancing now for 20 years now feel I am doing a good job of it and sometimes I fee the need to get up close to the drum and feel every beat in my soul, or stay in a small area. I enjoy every song and every dance. Im not a show off, I dont try to out do anyone else, I dance to honor our ancestors. I dance to honor our culture. I dance so our past as a proud people will not be forgotten.
That which is funny to others may be simply be a disabled person doing the best he or she can do with what they are given. I have a bad knee, torn ACL and MCL, some times it causes me to stumble and loose step. I mean no disrespect by it, it just happens. I dont let it slow me down, I recover, get back on beat and dance my heart out. A ho

Gourd dancing is a highly personal dance, Its not for the spectators nor the other dancers its for you.
The songs are very powerfull and for a time can take away your pain and life's issues. You forget its hot and that your tired all of those go away when you are dancing.
So for some they like to just stand and barely move, singing along with the singers.
Others like to move around getting those blessings in the arena...
Still others dance for those that can't dance any longer.

But the most special time is when the song is particular powerfull you will see some bounce off the ground both feet not touching the ground and war whoops all around you making your heart soar with the song!! But that is usually down in Gourd Dance Country in around Carnegie Oklahoma July 2nd 3rd and 4th... Those are special days!!!

My dancing depends on the song and of course the way the drum sings these songs. If a drum is blessed and really in the grove most of the songs will send you adancin. I don't do a lot of bouncing, etc. I like to dance around with dignity, I seldom stand in one spot but will on occassions. I enjoy the feeling of just getting to dance with my family and very close friends. I enjoy getting to dance with Josiah, Earle, Lee, Bruce, Bob, my brothers Paul and Jimmy along with many more. I always liked to dance with Charlie Chibitty, Granddad- Jack Greenback, Willard, Uncle Ed and others (forgive me for speaking the name of those who have passed).
