When I was home on leave while I was in the military I wore my full dress uniform held my shaker in one hand and my fan in the other!
And danced hard!!!
It was at Colony Oklahoma and I am here to tell you there were alot of folks that came out and danced with me that day it was an awesome feeling

At the time in the early 80's not too many wore there uniform while on leave but I was asked to bring it home. Also it was not common to see a Sailor in these parts! LOL

So I feel if your in the military bring home your dress uniform and come out to a dance!!!

This actually has a purpose, Stream.

I recently saw a picture of a large gourd dance and lots of the gourd dancers were wearing their fatigues and had gourd dance blankets on.

It looked a little strange to me.

Should the uniform only be worn by active duty? Or can retired wear theirs at a Gourd Dance too?

no offense Who, just yankin your chain. The main times I've seen this is when someone is home on leave, mostly in dress uniform. I have seen fatigues, but that was mostly from a color guard that was pulling "double duty", dancing gourd session to immediately bring in the flags right after. I personally like seeing the uniform out there. But I also liked following behind the Black Leggins color guard this last weekend at Tahlequah for the Cherokee National Holiday powwow, now there was a sight to behold!

I would also add that when I've seen someone show up in full dress, whether they were dancing or not, but particularly if they were gourd dancing, that person has been honored 100% of the times I've seen this. Makes everyone feel good I think...

oh! You mean...go to all dances in your uniform. ah...I was thinkin' like Stream...that you meant folks home on leave that go out to dance and be honoured. We all love seeing our young folks out there in uniform. They represent all of us and make us proud.

But, what you say...'bout folks coming to Gourd Dance in uniform all the time. Like us older folk putting on our old uniforms and coming out to dance? Have not seen that. Gourd Dance is not a veterans dance, so it would not be even relevant to the dance.

Do you see folks wearing their uniform to Gourd Dance all the time? I've only seen young folks on leave wearing their uniforms.

I don't wear anything 'military' when I dance Gourd Dance. It's not that it don't belong...it's just that my military service is not relevant to that dance.

Many folks adorn their blankets with their military pins and ribbons. Nothing wrong with that. Might be why some folks confused Gourd Dance with being some veterans dance.

Its one thing to come home on leave and wear your proper uniform its another thing to wear remnants of it after you have been out.

I had to look it up in my discharge papers because I knew it was in there somewhere. But I found it:
Chapter 15 – After Release from Full-Time Active Duty
C. Wearing Your Uniform: Do’s and Don’ts
· Always proper: After separation, it is appropriate to wear your uniform during Reserve duty.
· Sometimes proper: Under certain conditions, you may wear your uniform as a civilian. Generally, if you served honorably, you may wear your uniform:
o For military weddings, funerals, memorial services, or inaugural ceremonies.
o For patriotic parades on national holidays and for any military parades.
o For ceremonies in which a U.S. active or Reserve unit is taking part.
· Never proper: Never wear the uniform under circumstances that would detract from its prestige or tend to discredit the Armed Forces (such as attending a totalitarian or subversive function or while engaging in a business activity). Also, it is against the law for unauthorized persons to wear a uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Since my discharge I have never worn any part of my uniform and have only kept it as a keepsake. I dry clean it once a year and keep it hung up
The Uniform is to be worn only a certain way and it must be worn in a complete manner otherwise you are out of uniform and bring discredit upon the uniform and all that wear it...

Z,

When I see servicemen on leave, dressed in full uniform it also makes me extremely proud.

I, like yourself, am not used to seeing folks wearing their military fatigues each time they gourd dance. But some are beginning to do so.

I agree this adds to the confusion of the gourd dance "being some veterans dance."

So was it a whole group that was dancing? Like a veteran's group?

I know that some has always thought the Gourd dance was a Veteran's Dance and despite hearing Kiowa Elders stand up and say “no , its a Man's dance that feeling still persists in places. I suppose the farther away from the home of the dance you go you will hear that sentiment...

I've not seen that, pahbi. Could be like Josiah is saying...maybe a veterans group dancing together?

I know one thing...they aren't Marines.

Marines are not allowed to wear fatigues anywhere except on base/job, and to-from work. Marines wear "C's" or "A's/B's" or "Blues" out in public. Not fatigues. I don't think any Marine, active or veteran, would 'forget' their discipline and wear fatigues anywhere in public.

I remember going to a dance in Lawton wearing my uniform in the early early 80's. I also was priviledged enough to be reassigned during and after Daddy Bush's war. I believe I wore it at a CIVA dance, both times. My Uncle asked me to attend wearing my uniform. It still fit me then.

I haven't noticed dancers other than the Color Guards in Fatigues while dancing. I do wear some of mine, that will still fit, to hunt in. I purchased them I wear them without any insignia of course.

Josiah, I just don't understand a Squid wanting to show up in uniform,

Well now a sailor in uniform especially his dress blues makes the women swoon and the fathers growl

Is not the gourd dance sacred and pertains to warriors. Does anyone know the criteria to rightfully do the gourd dance and know the true meaning of the gourd dance. They are the first in the arena to purify the grounds, or am I mistaken. If so I hope to be enlightened.
