Is night time the right time?

Ok.... I've heard from some folks in SW Okla - both Kiowas and Comanches - that gourd dance is not supposed to be done after sundown.... their reasoning - which made sense to me - was that it was originally part of the K'ado (and if you don't know what that is, then I ain't gonna help yas... if you do know, then you'll understand...)

So, anybody else ever heard that? Should gourd dance be continued or even STARTED after sundown?

My uncle said In his day, the reason they didn't dance after dark was because they didn't have lights.

Yes I have heard that you should not dance after dark.
Having said that, at our annual last year we danced an all Gourd Dance session on our first day when normally after supper we switch to O-HO-MAH
We ended the first day around 1100pm.

I have never seen a gourd dance started after dark

Yes you're right str8dancer49 the Kiowa Tdien-Pei-Gah (Not Afraid to Die) was danced prior to the Kiowa Sundance. So many of the traditions were carried out to co-inside with the Sundance and both were danced before sundown.

Gourd Dance was part of the S'kaw-daw. (or, S'kaw-tow) yeppers.

After sundown? hmmm.... many of the Sun Dance rituals went along after sundown, so...dunno what that's about.

The Gourd Dance was part of our Sun Dance. Yes. So many parts alive today that all of us dance, without knowing why, are a reflection of part of our Kiowa Sun Dance. And, it is only a small part. Our Sun Dance was so elaborate in keeping that measure and keeping of it today would be near impossible to re-create.

But, the part our Gourd Dance has from our Sun Dance is still very much alive in all of us. That is, what makes it so special to dance for us is still special even for those without knowing the meaning why.

It is welcoming. Fulfilling. Comforting. Belonging.

Every person invited to take our dance understands the feeling. Every person invited to take our dance understands the responsibility they take in protecting the gift.

I know at Carnegie during the Kiowa Gourd Clan, they will have gourd dance after supper, then O-Ho-Mah. Then when it is all over, they will have Goo-Dah.

But you have to respect the families wish's for a special and that is why, they dance into the dark hours.
