Should anyone be interested in some written material on Gourd Dance origins and traditions I can recommend the following:
Howard, James H. 1950. The Omaha Hand Game and Gourd Dance. Newsletter of the Plains Archeological Conference, Vol. 1, No. 3. Howard, James H. 1976. The Plains Gourd Dance as a Revitalization Movement. American Ethnologist, Vol. 3, No. 2. Lassiter, Luke E. 1997. Charlie Brown: Not Just Another Essay on the Gourd Dance. American Indian Culture and Research Journal, Vol. 25, No. 4. Lassiter, Luke E. 1998. The Power of Kiowa Song: A Collaborative Ethnography. Tucson: University of Arizona Press. Lassiter, Luke E. 1999. Southwestern Oklahoma, the Gourd Dance, and Charlie Brown. In Contemporary Native American Cultural Issues, edited by Duane Champagne, Walnut Creek, CA: AltaMira Press. Meadows, William C. 2003. Kiowa, Apache and Comanche Military Societies: Enduring Veterans - 1800 to Present. University of Texas Press.

A program that I have was put out by the Kiowa Gourd Clan and is titled "Kiowa Gourd Clan", 2nd Edition, 1996. This has a daily activity schedule for July 2,3,4, but also has quality information on the history and the story behind the songs and dance. It has a number of good photos.
I'm not too familiar with the home dance. Perhaps other programs have been printed. |
