Vest or Blanket

I recently recieved a nice vest as a gift and have worn it occasionally
What are your thoughts on wearing a vest in place of wearing your Blanket
I know the blanket can get hot sometimes especially around here
Just wondering

I'm not a Gourd Dancer. But I was once told that neither are "required" for Gourd Dancers. So if heat is the issue, you could go with neither it seems; though you wouldn't be as stylish.

I use the blanket most of the time. I know alot of people use the blanket around the waist also. I do one of those two things.
Among my Comanche people, many wear the vests...mainly members of CIVA (Comanche Indian Veterans Association). Others wear it as well.
When I am in doubt, as to appropriateness, I always err to t he safe side...I.E. my trusty shoulder blanket.....Kio-Manche

My husband and son were taught to dress for church, long sleeve shirt, dress pants, tie or bolo. No jeans, tee shirts, sloppy clothing. They were also told that you do not wear a blanket unless you are a Veteran. My late father in law used to get so angry when he saw men (that he knew) or children wearing blankets........he used to tell me "If you didn't serve you just don't wear it". He did not serve and did not wear a blanket. My husband served so he is entitled, my son has not served and therefore cannot wear a blanket. The only exception is if you are a NAC member or it is handed down from a vet or church member.

I have both a nice vest that was gifted to me quite some time ago and a blanket. I will even wear both some times.

This is more mis-information that is so prevalent in the powwow world. I guess it will never end!
THE GOURD DANCE IS A GENTLEMAN'S DANCE, NOT A VETERANS DANCE!
Being a veteran is great. I am a veteran myself. I wear my miliatary ribbons with pride. But it is EXTRA! Not a requirement!
Again, the gourd dance is a man's dance, or to be more accurate, a gentleman's dance. Not a veterans dance. If people understood where the gourd dance came from, then I doubt there would be this confusion.

Read the Gourd Dance Comentary on powwows.com under "powwow info".

It is a Kiowa gentlemens dance. Go back and read some of the older post on here about where the dance came from.

I didn't say it was a Veterans Dance. I don't believe that it is either, was not taught that way. What I said was that my late father in law told us that only Veterans or NAC members wear the red and blue blanket............

I don't mean to put words in Kio-Manche's mouth, but I think what was meant was that you do not have to be a veteran to wear a gourd dance blanket.
