rosette for bustle....need some help

Hi everybody!

I just recently talked somebody out of using one of those cheap, Hong Kong rosettes for his bustle & offered to make one for him.
Making the rosette is no problem. My design is working out well. When the beading is complete, I plan to put some Eskatuff between the beadwork and backing to make it stiff.
I am also attaching the rosette to a piece of Eskatuff that is a little bit larger than it to protect the beading (a suggestion made by the person who is getting the rosette). I plan to cover the Eskatuff with leather and do some edging beadwork around it. (The edge beading shouldn't get too beat up...I'm going to use the rolled edge style.)

Here's where I'm not sure of some stuff.

1) My rosette will be about 5 - 5 1/2 inches in diameter (the largest one I will have made up to this time)when I am finished with the beading. How many holes would you suggest putting through the backing to attach the rosette to the bustle?

2) What's the best thing to use in attaching a rosette to a bustle?

Thanks for your help. I have a feeling that after I get through this rosette that I will most likely be making more. (crossing my fingers because I could use the extra income :D )

For those of you who are interested, the Eskatuff (a vinyl material) I mentioned above is being sold in sheets by Noc Bay. It comes in two thicknesses (medium .035 in. and heavy .055 in.).

The medium comes in these size sheets.
4 1/2" x 26" ($1.75 each $15.00 /10) and 24"x 48" ($8.00)

The heavy comes in a 24"x48" sheet. ($13.00)

Myself, I would probably use four holes at least, since it is so large.
As for the eskatuff you using the medium or the heavy?

I would really like to see photos when you are finished.:)

I don't know much about how a bustle is made..but I would agree with Mato that you should at least use 4 holes..two more towards the top and two more towards the bottom rather than all centered.

Hey there, Mato!

I'm using the medium weight eskatuff. It was cheaper than the heavy weight and could alway be doubled if it wasn't stiff enough. You can be sure that I will be putting some pictures in the gallery. I've described enough projects that I have been working on or have completed. It's time for some visuals. :)

Thanks, Blackbear. I can't wait to see this rosette get completed & get put in the middle of that bustle. Maybe I'll be making more if this turns out.

Don't punch them

Suzizila

I would suggest that you do not make any holes in the back of the rosette and leave that to the friend with the bustle. You see the holes will determine how the rosette sits in the center of the bustle and need to correspond to the holes that are in the backboard the bustle is strung on. The rosette needs to placed on the backboard and marked through the holes to insure it lines up right. I would leave it to the lazy bugger that is having you do his beadwork. One less thing for you to worry about ;)

PB49,

Thanks for the advice. I am having fun with designing this rosette & would not even be making this rosette if I hadn't opened my mouth. It just seemed that seeing my work in the middle of that bustle would one less piece of Hong Kong **** included in the dance clothing of someone with the group I am with right now and a chance to expand upon my own beading skills. (This is going to be the largest rosette I will have made up to this date. Until this time, my largest was a 4" made of cuts....another fun project for myself. ) I have a feeling that this probably won't be the last rosette I will make for someone of this group, unless I start teaching beading classes. They just don't know how to bead, or don't have a whole lot of time to bead because of kids, so they end up using the Hong Kong ****. Oh well, I will most likely be having more fun in the future.....which is fine with me as I have a bunch of beads that I need to use up. :)

stringing question

Ok, now that I've had all sorts of suggestions about the holes, I have one more question. (It must have gotten lost in my first post.)

What do you all suggest as being the best thing to use in tying this rosette to the bustle?

****Remember, I am learning as I go. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks to everyone who has contributed their 2 cents so far.****:Rainbow

bustle rosette

My current backboard is covered with trade cloth. So, the rosette is sewed directly to it. On my old bustle though, I used the old dependable shoe string method. I know it doesn't sound traditional, but it will not stretch or come untied as easily as buckskin thong. And, with that big of a rosette, you should definitely use 4 holes.

If you must make the holes yourself and want to provide the ties too then try this. Braid some simulated sinew for the ties. Since this stuff is waxed it sticks to itself and won't work itself loose while dancing. It works great!
