2010 Census Map

Here's a link to the 2010 Census Map of NDN country...shows the reservations and other Indian country across the US...and some facts and figures.

http://www.census.gov/geo/www/maps/a..._wall_map.html

5.2M self identifies Native Americans...we must have one of the highest growth rates!!

Wyo,

Thanks for posting this. One 2010 Census statistic that I think is a major change is that only 22% of NdNs live in American Indian and Alaskan Native areas. 78% live away from Indian areas. Hopefully, funding for health, education will reflect this change.

One kewl outcome that I want to share is one of the top participants in collecting the 2010 Census is a Cheyenne-Arapaho tribal member. Her name is Dee Ann (Lame Bull)Alexander. For her outstanding work she was promoted to the United States Department of Commerce - Sr. Advisor of Native American Affairs. The US Census is under the Department of Commerce. Dee Ann was a former Director of Red Earth in Oklahoma City.

I hope it does increase funding...even though I shutter to see some of the numbers.

105,000 self identified Blackfeet. There's 16,500 enrolled on the Blackfeet rez...possibly double that in decendents, even triple. That leaves a whole lotta 'blackfoot' ndns.

Wyo,

A whole lotta people claiming Blackfeet ancestry live on the East Coast.

The funny thing about the census... you only have to self identify yourself as American Indian or Alaskan Native in order to be counted.

Maybe that'll take some heat off the Cherokees.

I've heard a lot of folks lately claiming Blackfeet ancestry, too.

I've noticed that too up here. Now, some of it (here at least) is due to Bill C31 being implemented back in the 80s and those who had been enfranchised for marrying out or the other reasons were allowed to regain their status. We did have a huge bump in population across the country back then.

Do you think that some(and by that I mean a handful of people who legitimately are connected) of the claims might be because of the regaining of status up here has caused a ripple effect in the states due to relatives moving back and forth across the border?

Now I have noticed that now a "noobskin" person's tribal affiliation claim usually is to a large tribe that has membership across the both sides of the US/Canada borders (or as with the Cherokee, Lakota and Apache a huge amount of Hollywood use in films). This has certainly changed from claiming to be one of the more popular Hollywood portrayed tribes of the 70s, 80s and 90s when information wasn't as easy to check up on and FN folks certainly didn't have a huge network like we have today.

The cross border affiliation is in my opinion, based on the presumption that no one will bother to check anyone out in either Canada or the US. It may seem easy to the noobskin to claim being from the other side of the border so that one can also claim that information is "too hard" to track down. I saw a lot of that with the folks in Canada claiming to be descended from an American family of Mohawk or claiming to be a Mi'kmaq from NB while living in PA. As usual, the story also comes with the "we had to hide away to stay alive or my ancestors escaped to Canada or the US because of loyalist or revolutionary ties". Now it seems to be plains folks that have territory on both sides of the border.

I would also assume that claiming to be Lakota is over as there is way too much information available now on who exactly survived Wounded Knee and who their descendants were. That would be the troublesome part now in making those claims.

Since the plains culture is still very attractive to the nuagers and noobskins and since most of the Sioux history is too well known now, I think people are finding the Blackfeet a tribe to claim as not much is really out there and if someone questions a claim, one can always use the Canadian angle to cover up missing family connections. You don't see folks claiming to be Cree in the US as they can't quite make how they ended up in the states all fit - unless they use the adoption angle which again because of inroads into getting the info out is too easy to prove or disprove now. I guess to the nuagers that just love the plains culture, being Blackfoot is now the new Lakota.

Or am I smoking seaweed?

No, that would make sense. I was thinking alone those same lines, that if you claimed Blackfeet it would be less likely that someone with actual knowledge of that tribe, those families, those ways, would call you out on it.

You left out one common argument though - "We were hiding out in the mountains." LOL!

I thought about adding that one, but then there aren't a lot of mountains on plains... canyons yes, sloughs yes, valleys yes, but not a lot of mountains (except over near the AB/BC border and that's Stoney/Saulteaux/Peigan/Bloods territory.)Can you imagine someone says, "My family hid out in the sloughs to keep from getting tracked down my the Queen's cowboys"?

Now, I do have to add that there are (up here anyway) some historical instances where entire bands were enfranchised and their treaty lands ceded by over zealous Indian agents. Those bands are in litigation since Bill C31 to have their lands restored. With the amount of claims currently filed, it'll be another 30 years before they are all dealt with. Up until Bill C31, it was almost impossible to regain status from enfranchisement. Most people didn't even try.

Anybody ever check the actually COLOR of these peoples feet? I've had many blacks tell me their grandmother was Blackfoot. Even said their gramma had hair and cheekbones like mine! I must be Blackfoot, too!!!

Anybody else ever heard of the Blackhawk Tribe? I know there are two of them in the world. My black friend told me his grandma was one...so that makes him one...so that makes TWO!

I wonder how long it's going to be before everyone thinks it is cool to be from the Aleutians...

Wasn't Bobby Hull one of dem thar Blackhawks?

My aunt was making note one day that whenever Hollywood makes a film about either Indians or a specific breed of dogs... there is a jump in that particular population shortly after the film comes out. When Dances with Wolves and Beethoven came out... she feared that there was going to be a whole whack of folks that were going to be instant Lakota with big St Bernards as their totems. LOL I just hope they never make a film about us and have a dog film about those hairless chinese dogs... I won't be able to keep a straight face when I meet a Yukon Tutchone/Tlingit with a hairless dog... LMAO!

My former supervisor was a Blackfoot lawyer. We both worked with the public. When someone she didn't recognize told her they were Blackfoot she would reply, "what color is the other foot?"
