My Pops lived in Tokyo for about 10 years. He liked it. I know several people that have been there and worked there and they all seemed happy there. There used to be a couple powwows.com members living there......don't remember their handles right off.

My theory is, always do the interview. Even if you don't end up wanting the job, it's good practice to interview and sometimes it opens up other opportunities.

I've never been to Japan but I knew somebody who had grown up there (military base). Obviously there is the mega city of Tokyo but there are still wild areas outside the major cities and it's a very pretty country. And you're all set if you like seafood - they've got it all!

I have been to Tokyo for business & I really liked it! At my old job, we subcontracted software development to a lab in Japan. The quality of their work was/is at the highest level. The labor cost we had to pay in Japan was/still is very expensive (especially when compared to China or India) because it is very expensive to live/work there.

I found the Japanese people to be incredibly polite, considerate, and many elements of their culture are similar to traditional NDN ways, e.g. in not thinking of oneself but the importance of what a person can do for the good of the group.

I found most of my Japanese colleagues/teammates to be very humble. As an outsider/foreigner, it seemed to me that merit/promotion was based on performance results, & not so much on politics. Things could be different in other Japanese work environments, but this was my experience.

I am wondering what are the things that are making you hesitate?

Many times when I've been faced with a decision of taking 2 paths, it's been helpful for me to write down on a sheet of paper the positives & negatives of each alternative. What do I like & dislike about each. It helps me sort things out from all of the thoughts & emotions that are swirling around in my head & in my heart. Then I also pray about it & ask for help & guidance for what I should do. Maybe this would be helpful to you, too?

With your bad spelling and less than desired punctuation. I don't think that you deserve the job.

While we are on the topic of Japan, I had this amazing experience while visiting there & it gave me a glimpse into their culture & I thought I share it.

We had been on a week-long business trip in Tokyo. My teammate, his wife & I wanted to visit a Shinto Shrine. It was Saturday & I was flying back later that night. We had already checked out of the hotel we had been staying at; my friends had switched hotels because they were staying an extra week for vacation. I was just storing my luggage in their room while we did our site-seeing.

The concierge at the new hotel gave us directions; he wrote down the address & instructions for us. Most of it was in Kanji & I couldn’t make heads or tails of anything it said. Luckily, we found it with no problem. The shrine was really incredibly beautiful & peaceful; the shrines were built to house sacred spirits. I was surprised to find out & see that they have their own version of smudging there. Wow, isn’t that interesting, all the way over there, huh? I felt fortunate that I was able to visit this site. Never in my wildest dreams, did I ever think I would get this kind of opportunity in life.

On the way back, we ended up getting lost. So I randomly asked a family (a Mom & Dad who had 2 small children) walking towards us on the street if they could point us in the right direction to the subway. Actually I asked the woman because in their culture, it would have been considered rude for me, as a woman, to go up to & start talking to a man.

Luckily, the dad spoke English & he told us how to go. After 20 minutes or so later of walking blocks & blocks, we still hadn’t come across the subway station. I told my friends I didn’t think we were going the right way & it didn’t look like the way we had come before. It was a hot & sweaty day; the air was close and heavy on us. We were getting tired & my feet were aching. Then all of sudden, that dad ran up from behind us & told us he was so sorry that he realized he had given me/us the wrong directions.

It was clear he had been running to catch up to us & was out of breath & perspiring. He profusely apologized to us. A little bit later his wife & children showed up; they had jogged too but not as fast. They had all doubled back to find us & put us on the right path.

I looked at all of them & felt so badly that I had interrupted their outing & had caused them this inconvenience. I was amazed that he & his family would go out of their way to correct this mistake with strangers. Wow…if this had happened in NY City, I think that many people wouldn’t have given it a 2nd thought of their error & wouldn’t have tried to find us.

From my Japanese culture class, I knew it was proper & polite that I should thank them for their kindness. I thought what can I do? I had bought some Japanese cookies to bring back for my family. They were already gift wrapped which is real important in Japanese gift giving. So I apologized, thanked them & gave them these cookies as a small token of my/our appreciation.

We finally made our way back to the hotel after stopping at a couple more shops & bumping into a little make-shift parade of 30 people singing/chanting & carrying some sort of a pagoda type ornamental building on their shoulders. We had been in no hurry to get back.

To my surprise, the doorman at the hotel stopped me & said that I had guests waiting for me & told me that I should go with him. I was thinking that he’s confused & has the wrong person. This didn’t make sense…I wasn’t registered at the hotel & no one except my friends knew I was there. If it was anyone from work, they would have asked to speak w/my teammate not me. My teammate helped me to explain the situation, but the doorman insisted. We figured okay let’s go with him & get this sorted out.

So the doorman escorted me over to the side of this big lobby & we couldn’t believe what we saw. Standing there all in a line was this same family smiling! OMGosh!! They had a present they wanted to give me. I was really astounded; my friends couldn’t believe it either. After I had given them the cookies, they had gone out & bought a gift for me to thank me for giving them a gift. Like wow…is this something?

The mom & dad noticed the hotel name & address from when I showed them the directions for the subway. Patiently they had waited with their kids for 30-45 minutes for us to return to the hotel. I told them this was not necessary & thanked them again. Then we parted ways.

When I got home, I opened up my gift; it didn’t matter what it was, just that they had done this was amazing to me. The gift was a collection of traditional Japanese folk figurines that represent different protections. I have treasured this gift more for the memory of this experience & what it showed to me of Japanese culture through a chance encounter.

Last time I was in Japan...1991.

I enjoyed it there. I was there 1987, 1989, 1991. Was deployed there with the Marines. I wouldn't mind going back. To visit this time.

eagleclanriverband、 I think the biggest thing is that I would be realy far from my family and my grandfather is really old and Im not sure how much time he has left and I'd feel horrible if I wasnt here.
I get excited about going but then im just kind of like ''eh'' I don't know lol last time I was in japan I definatly felt like I got along better than here in the U.S in regards to politeness and selflessness.

Hey wanji thank you for youre honestly. Im a super lazy typer and I often respond when im on break from work so I dont have much time lol
