Timberlake's family offended by stunt


LOS ANGELES (AP) --Justin Timberlake said Wednesday that his own family was offended by his racy Super Bowl halftime duet with Janet Jackson, but he insisted he thought only her bustier would be revealed when he pulled on her costume, not her breast.

Timberlake, in an interview with KCBS-TV outside the Staples Center, where he was rehearsing for Sunday's Grammy Awards, said he understood "how unfortunate this is."

"I do understand that there were a lot of people that were completely offended by what happened, including my own family. And I think that's probably the part that's frustrating the most for me and it's completely, completely, completely, regrettable," he told KCBS.

He also said he was frustrated that his character was being questioned.

Timberlake said that before the show he got a call from Jackson and her choreographer saying they wanted to do a "costume reveal."

"Now I was under the impression that what was going to be revealed ...was a red brassierre, bustier," he said.

He said he did not have time to rehearse the move before taking the stage, and was shocked at the outcome.

Janet Jackson not on Grammy presenter list

NEW YORK (CNN) --Singer Janet Jackson is not likely to appear as a presenter at the Grammy Awards ceremony Sunday, her publicist said Wednesday.

"We don't think she's going to go," publicist Steven Huvane told CNN.

Jackson, whose right breast was bared to a national television audience during Sunday's Super Bowl halftime show, was scheduled to introduce a tribute to singer Luther Vandross. Since Vandross is too ill to attend the ceremony, Jackson may not appear.

Jackson's name was not on a list of presenters released Wednesday by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.

A day earlier, CBS announced it will broadcast the Grammys using an "enhanced" tape delay system, an apparent effort to avoid a repeat of the breast-baring incident.

For the first time in the 46-year history of the Grammys, the network will be able to delete inappropriate video as well as audio, CBS said in a written statement Tuesday.

Celebrities have been known to misbehave on awards shows, including U2's Bono using a four-letter vulgarity during NBC's live broadcast of the 2003 Golden Globes. In 1998, a non-celebrity caused problems at the Grammys when he rushed the stage during Bob Dylan's performance.

In previous years, the show aired with a five-second tape delay, enabling network censors to delete offensive language but leaving them helpless against surprise images such as nudity or hand gestures.

"The precise length of the new delay has yet to be determined," said the statement, which makes no mention of Jackson or the Super Bowl.

At the end of the Super Bowl halftime show, Jackson's right breast was exposed when Justin Timberlake ripped off a portion of her outfit as they finished singing "Rock Your Body."

Politicians and throngs of CBS viewers voiced their outrage. Timberlake called it a "wardrobe malfunction." Jackson spokesman Stephen Huvane said Timberlake was supposed to pull away Jackson's bustier while leaving her red-lace bra intact.

Jackson herself said neither CBS nor MTV, which produced the halftime show, were aware of the stunt beforehand.

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it," Jackson said in a written statement.

"It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended -- including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL."

Despite those apologies and others from CBS and MTV, the Federal Communications Commission launched an investigation Monday and FCC Chairman Michael Powell said he did not believe the breast exposure was an accident.

Powell said MTV and the CBS network's 16 owned-and-operated stations and more than 200 affiliated stations could "conceivably" be fined $27,000 apiece.

This year's Grammy Awards ceremony will be broadcast at 8 p.m. ET Sunday.

Timberlake, 50 Cent, Christina Aguilera, Outkast and Celine Dion are among those set to perform.

Timberlake is nominated in five Grammy categories, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

(CNN) --The revealing of Janet Jackson's breast during the Super Bowl halftime show has had far-reaching consequences for the broadcast television networks, two major awards shows and the highly rated program "ER" -- as well as for the singer and co-star Justin Timberlake.

• Jackson's publicist said she may back out of Sunday's Grammy Awards, scheduled to air on CBS. (See story) Jackson reportedly had been scheduled to introduce a tribute to ailing singer Luther Vandross. She has apologized for the Super Bowl exposure. (See story)

• Timberlake on Wednesday said he believed only Jackson's bustier would be revealed when he pulled at her costume. He added that his family was "offended by what happened."

• CBS has placed both audio and video on a delay for the Grammys. (See story) ABC announced it would do the same thing for the Oscars, scheduled for February 29. (See story)

• NBC has trimmed a glimpse of an 80-year-old's breasts during an emergency procedure from Thursday's night's episode of "ER," according to The Associated Press. The network said Wednesday it had "unfortunately concluded that the atmosphere created by this week's events has made it too difficult for many of our affiliates to air this shot." • The NFL has replaced one of Timberlake's 'N Sync band mates, JC Chasez, in Sunday's Pro Bowl halftime show. The new halftime plan is for a Hawaiian extravaganza featuring hula dancers, drummers, conch shell blowers and local singers, the AP reports.

Timberlake offered a statement to Los Angeles, California, station KCBS-TV on the controversy Wednesday.

CBS facing investigation; MTV deal called off

MTV has suffered other fallout as well. The school board in Laguna Beach, California, voted unanimously Wednesday to forbid the network to build a reality show around the lives of its high school students, according to the AP

Board members had tentatively approved the deal last week. It would have given the district as much as $40,000, plus royalties for college scholarships, the AP reported.

The deal was nixed after the board faced opposition from angry parents. "The tenor of the landscape has changed in light of the events during the Super Bowl," school board member Bob Whalen told the news service.

The NFL was also upset by MTV's halftime show, saying the network, which has produced halftime shows for the Super Bowl in the past, will never work again for the sports league.

The one-second flashing revealed Jackson's right breast clad only in a sun-shaped nipple covering to some 89 million viewers.
