I second what @OLChemist said about the Houston Museum District. And the Menil collection is wonderful.

For a little peace and tranquility in Houston - there's always the Rothko Chapel. Founded by the Menils, and inspired by the works of Mark Rothko. It's been 3 - 4 years since I've been, but I've always enjoyed it for quiet and reflection. Plus, I'm a big fan of Rothko.

I am not sure that I have can be of much help since I pretty much at the beginning of Route 66 unless you plan on passing thru CA. I have only traveled Route 66 to Stillwater, OK and back on the Greyhound. I have been to the Oklahoma bombing memorial, OU College, Tulsa Mall, Tulsa Airport, and Pawnee Bills. I would like to back to Santa Fe, NM.

Not sure if route 66 comes through Pennsylvania, but if you'll be coming this way, Gettysburg is a nice place to visit. Lots of museums and shops there.

Only things I could remember visiting were: Graceland in Memphis, WW II Museum in New Orleans, LA, by Hattiesburg, MS @ Camp Shelby, there is a war museum, of course the coastline of I-10 thru LA, MS, AL FL. I drove that a lot when I lived in MS. Casinos in Biloxi right on the Gulf of Mexico was my fave spot.

For the totally roadside weirdness, you're in luck:

The Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo. The Blue Whale in Catoosa, OK. The Round Barn in Arciada, OK. The Worlds (second) Largest Chair in Anniston, AL.

Cadillac Ranch

Blue Whale

Round Barn

Can you tell I've travelled with a friend who has a fascination with roadside weirdness? Thanks to her I've stayed in a motel in Holbrook shaped like a tipi, taken picture of people in front of oversized, frequently misshapen concrete animals, been to the International UFO Museum, actually darkened a door of Wall Drug, eaten in giant hotdogs, hamburgers and ice cream cones...

From Oklahoma City, I will have to veer off on Interstate 40 and head into Arkansas and Tennesee. From Memphis, I will head southeast to Birmingham and Atlanta. There are many points of interests I wish to experience while in Northern GA while I'm in the area.

My husband is an Eagles fan, and he got his picture taken there last summer when we drove through.

The Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, OK, is one of the coolest museums I've ever visited (yeah, I know, I'm a little biased). It borders the Chickasaw National Recreation Center, which is an oasis of springs and waterfalls.

Food-wise...if you happen to be in Amarillo during lunch or dinner time, check out the Big Texan restaurant. Yes, it's kind of touristy, but the food is really good. If you can eat the 72 oz. steak plus all the fixin's in an hour, you get it for free (otherwise, it costs like $50).

In Missouri, there is some pretty country around Lake of the Ozarks. You'd have to detour a bit off of the main highway, but it really is pretty along there.

That's all I can think of at the moment...if I think of anything else, I'll pass it on.
