People wear theeir hair the way they want know days. i always wear my hair loose and flowing I like it long and ain't afraid to show my healthy beutuful hair. Why braid it and have it binded but thats MY choice. I know navajos and othere men where there hair in some bun but believe me most of them only do it at pow wows or stuff. Here in the bay area the men i know wear it in a pony tail and when they really wna tot be idnian they wear it in 2 braids..Some ladys to. I'm proud of the fact i have long healthy beuaitufl hair!

Okay I got to know what turning your skirts one way or having your belts fringe on a certain side means and which tribes this contains too.

Annie,

Uh, yes and no.

I really WOULD shawl dance in a 4-FT afro, if I was guaranteed to win first place in a "$1000 winner take all" switch dance contest!

What can I say

Now if I had to dance with a 5-foot afro..... I would have to think about it first..... *L

OK, here's my $.02 worth of what I've been told and what I do. I'm married and I wear my hair in two braids most of the time. (Simply because its less fuss.) Some times I wear it straight down. I was told that a married woman wears 2 feathers in her hair hanging down and that a single woman wears one standing up. Now this may be wrong info. But I do wear 2 braids and 2 feathers in my hair.
I do agree it would be nice to know who is married and who is not. I also agree that spray-painted hair, cornrows, and 6 braids is way too much.
OK, that's my, well, $.03 worth. J.

People...people...people...when talking about things...tell us what tribal teachings you're referring to...this would help out a lot with these misunderstandings and arguments on here. Annie Fawn first posted that stuff and didn't say what tribe she was talking about, but then posted Choctaw. Ok, so other Choctaws...is this true for your people?

ChiefGrayBear - what tribe are you talking about?

With so many tribes out there its impossible to know the traditions of each so even if there are set ways for girls to wear their hair, plumes, or feathers, it still wouldn't do us any good at an intertribal pow wow...lol...

And the thing I don't get is if you want to know who's married and who's not...didja ever think to just ask?

I see ladies with ponytails and some with their hair down, I don't know. I make my little one have two braids. If we are in a rush, it's a quick tie and two braids so it won't look bushy. I've seen people braid lightning into their hair...corn rolls.......I think the only people who wear the single braids or two braids are the older folks. I don't know Annie.
Ever since my last post I've been wondering...What color are people spray painting their hair? How outrageous is it?

Yeah Singer DAD I agree. If people are going to post what they were taught they should mention the tribe or boyscout troop they learned it from. LOL

Anyways..............
Navajos have a traditional hairstyle worn by both men and women, with just differences in the way it's wrapped for each. They are rare sightings a powwow's, because Navajo's at powwows wear braids and cornrows.... LOL and probably spray paint. LOL I don't know of anything that was traditionally worn that shows who is single and who is married.

I agree with whoever said Today's powwows are intertribal. And are relatively a recent phenonmena in Indian Country. So how can a 1898 grandma know how you wear your hair at a powwow. If that was her tribal teaching, then it was probably more of a local tradition, which should be honored that way.

I was taught that married status is shown by where a woman wears her side drops. The left side is for married women and the right for single women. For Southeastern women who traditionally wear their hair down or loose with a top clip or comb, I was taught that our status is shown by where are zippers appear on the stomp dress. Single women wear their zipper in the back and married women in the front.

My 1898 born mammaw died at 93 when I was in my mid 20s . She attended numberous pow wows through the years as well as many multi tribal gatherings. Mammaw was a smart woman who followed traditional ways and never stopped learning as much as she could about every thing she could. Her mother was a medicine woman who taught my grandmother that she would have to learn the white ways to get by. She also taught her to hold close the old ways and teach them to her children and their children.
Before you say something about a persons age and what would they know, I would like to remind you that it is because of our Elders that our people have managed to save and hold on to the traditions of our people when the white's tried to destroy those very traditions, by sending our people to boarding schools, out lawing our languages, ect...

Was your daughter taught the jingle tradition of one single braid down the back? Years ago Kateri Walker's spokesperson at her special said the traditional jingle way is one long braid to symbolize the dancer's allegiance and prayers for her tribe. That got me noticing jinglers more closely. I still see many with two, french, and the one long braid. So I was wondering if the one long braid is Ojibway or not. Maybe somebody made that up too.
