I have seen documentation of fry bread being made and served to French voyaguers in the old NW Territory/Minnesota in 1811. I'll see if I can get it again. Yeah, this ought to be an interesting thread.

Well, my great gram made frybread. I know cuz I ate some. She also made oven-baked bannock. I ate that too. And I, in the tradition of great frybread makers, am a champion frybread maker. I have the trophy to prove it. So there.:taunting: :D

True....... a visit to Black Leggings a few years ago in Anadarko was a surprise. First of all.. I was not too enthused to try the kidneys, while my kiowa friends were drooling just at the mere mention of it. I ordered a frybread and was shocked to see how round and puffy it was. I asked the man behind the counter if I could make my own. *LOL* He laughed.. and said NO. So I had to eat the round ball of fried dough. Not bad... I just was envisioning my ability to really show them how to make some real NAVAJO frybread! *L*

I always heard that NDN's started making frybread when they started receiving commodities, so for us it was around 1863(?).

Maybe it was someone who was making torillas....dropped it into the wrong skillet?...it puffed up...and then threw some mutton and green chiles on it...and said...hmmmmmmmmm frybread....
