HoopDancer/IntoTheWest

I've heard of talented women hoop dancers

I've heard of a World's Champion Hoop Dance Contest

I've even heard of hoop dancers on late night talk shows.

but...

A Lakota Hoop dancer in the 1830's? (courtesy of "Into The West" - Part 3)

Hmmmmmmm???????

While it is bad that they are being historically inaccurate, remember the old adage, There is no such thing as bad press. At least now they are making some effort to make us more than one dimensional people. In movies in the old days we were seen simply as bloodthirsty savages, nowadays we are starting to be viewed differently. Just hope they don't show a bunch of teenagers with a lot of hickies. OMG dude.

So what next?

An Indian casino on the horizon?

I can see it now. . .

The Wheelers exit off into the shadows of the neon lights of an 1830's Lakota casino and win some buffalo bucks!

colonah,

The Wheeler women already were deep in buffalo chips in episode 2.

I just think this movie is perpetuating negative stereotypes that are already rampant. My reference to the casinos is a current purception by the American public that "all Indians get rich from Indian casinos" and "we have an unfair advantage because we don't have to pay taxes." Into the West promotes negative stereotypes about Indian people:

* Alcohol = Indians (episodes 1 and 2),
* Indians are Stoic and generally complacent (episodes 1, 2 and 3),
* Indians hoop and hollar as their only way to communicate (episodes 1, 2 and 3) and
* all Indian women are easy (episode 1).

It's sad to say but. . .

"The American Public gets most of their information about Indians from television and the movies."
