How do you feel about the U.S.A. naming its weapons (particularly weapons of mass destruction) after Native American nations?

(btw, I'm having computer problems, so this may be the last that you hear from me for tonight.)

I've read some of Chomsky, sometimes he can go pretty far off the deep end, but all in all, a pretty good read.

Having served with Pershing Missile, NATO Forces, and the great 7th Army, Oklahoma and Germany, as well as Blanding, Utah, I really have no problem with the military naming some of their lesser weapons systems after Native American Nations, or using Native American names. While serving with Pershing, I can recall other Native Americans, a Cherokee, and a Navajo, and they didn't seem to have any problem with it either, at least it was never mentioned, to my recollection. Really, at the time, I think we were too involved with other things, being 21, single, and in Europe, and in Germany, if you get the drift. While in Florida, a few days ago, my son took me to a German restaurant. We had schnitzel, a great big tall glass of German beer, and they played Fest Music in the background. It brought back some fond memories. As I have gotten older, I just remember the good times, and sort of block out all of the bad, tough, times.

Sioux Helicopter

No. 10: Bell 47 OH-13 Sioux
Manufacturer: Bell Helicopter
Type: General Utility Helicopter
Powerplant: One Lycoming V0-435-A1B 6-Cylinder Engine
Principal Armament: Two 7.62-mm Machine Guns
Carrying Capacity: 2 Medical Litters or 1,000-pound Cargo
Maximum Cruising Speed: 83 mph

The first of many U.S. Army helicopters to be named after Native American tribes, the Bell 47 Sioux was distinctive for its bubble canopy, exposed welded-tube tail boom and saddle fuel tanks. Its two-bladed rotor made a "chop-chop" sound, leading to the nickname "chopper" for helicopters. Easily recognizable for its appearances in the smash hit film and television series MASH, the Sioux earned its reputation during the Korean war -- the conflict in which helicopters first cut their teeth.

The Apache is a twin-engined army attack helicopter developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). It entered service with the US Army in 1984 and has been exported to Egypt, Greece, Israel, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

The US Army has more than 800 Apaches in service, and more than 1,000 have been exported. The Apache was first used in combat in 1989 in the US military action in Panama. It was used in Operation Desert Storm and has supported low intensity and peacekeeping operations worldwide including Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.

The AH-64D Longbow has been deployed by the US Army in Afghanistan as part of Operation Anaconda, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and, from June 2003, in South Korea.
"The Apache is a twin-engined army attack helicopter developed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing)."

The AH-64D Longbow is fitted with the Longbow millimetre wave fire control radar and the Longbow Hellfire missile. 501 AH-64A Apaches upgraded to AH-64D standard have been delivered to the US Army. Deliveries completed in August 2006.

13 additional new-build Apaches have been ordered. A further 11 were ordered in November 2006. In January 2007, the US Army ordered 96 additional remanufactured helicopters and, in April 2007, 18 new-build helicopters. The first new-build AH-64D was delivered to the US Army in June 2007 and the first of the additional remanufactured helicopters in October 2007.

We "Sioux" have got the historic bubble-copter, yes how nostalgic. I haven't been keeping up with military technology, is anything been named the Akicita yet? I think that's a name worthy of something high-tech, formidable, ultra-efficient and most important of all really cool looking.

Oh and of course let's not forget the Chinook:

Officially the UH-1 series is the Iroquois, named as are all American military helicopters after an Indian tribe. It's unofficial name, Huey, became so commonly used that the AH-1 attack version was officially named the Huey Cobra. The Huey story traces back some five decades. In 1955, with an interest in a utility helicopter designed around a turbo-shaft engine, the US Army had the US Air Force develop a new helicopter for its use. At that time the US Army did not have its own aircraft development capability.

I remember sitting in the side door and pushing off when I wore a younger man's clothes. Just glad my static line was connected.

Thumbs up Apache Helo

This is a propaganda flyer I picked up on the battlefield in Afghanistan. The Army flies over a village and air drops these flyers. This flyer is about the size of a dollar bill. I never did get my terp to translate it, but it has Apaches on it and they were scared of them in-country.

Thinking about it, there is no other choices for American weapons, ships, and aircraft. They must be named after Native American tribes.

I don't think it would strike fear in the enemy calling a helo a "Pilgrim", "Fur Trader", Blue Coat" or any other white guy names.
