I dont pull them up that high anymore. Now I wear them below my gut so that I can buy smaller waist sizes. I just have to buy larger shirts now. I'm going this weekend to get my ears and my back waxed.

Oh they may fight for them, but you don't hear them voice out on behalf of us.
The fact is, if I want to stand up for native women as one myself I would say. Native women know what it's like to raise up a household on their own. They know what it's like to find a man who's been through hell his whole life and then to help him, she's forced to "raise" him as well. Native women live through sexual abuse, alcoholism, spousal abuse, rape, diabetes, high blood pressure, STD's, cheating, living in the worst conditions possible; and so do the native men. The difference??? The native women prevail, and then it's up to us to help keep the men afloat. So we're chosen to carry this burden and this struggle in hopes that we stay a strong people and keep our traditions alive, our stories alive, and our hope that one day when we die, people will think of us as good women, strong women, not just native women. Why do you not see many native women out in public places??? We're at home, taking care of our families after work. We're at home beading, sewing, cooking, comforting, teaching our children. We're at home listening, comforting and encouraging our husbands when they've been at work for a year and never was late or missed a day or work, yet they get passed up for a promotion given to a white guy who's only been there four months. We're at home, taking care of our own the best way we know how. That's the pride of native women and that is how I'm going to "TOOT" the horn of these frybread making, dark skinned, brown haired, big smiling, caring eyed, native dancing, child rearing, college bound, housemaking, hard working, loving wife, loving sister, loving daughter, made only by the hand of God b/c of the toils and tribulations she has been through; NATIVE WOMAN. God bless all of us and all the tears we have shed to keep sane, to keep strong and to keep going, and going, and going.........

Girl you get really intense. What you say about everything is good but if you want to be effective when you slam somebody, don't do so at the expense of others. You said some very powerful things about Native, Indian, Aboriginal, Native American: women. While there is some truth to the things you say about our men in the society, do not broadly brush your strokes to paint all of us as lost and tragic souls. I come from a household where there was alcoholism, I was abused by many as a child. I have heard from numerous young Aboriginal, Indian men incarcerated that they, their grandparents and parents were survivors of residential school. They were sexually abused and physically abused, they were products of broken dysfunctional homes. I come from a similar background and I work as a parole officer. I don't drink, do drugs and I am a powwow singer. I applaud you for the things you have done. However do not say that women save men; we save each other. Too many people in our tribes want to blame other peoples for our problems. There may be truth to this but we, as various nations need to support all of our people. We can not become strong by pointing the finger at a group/gender and blame those. We need to strive to become self reliant and acknowledge the terrible things that have happened to us in history. We need to focus on the positive things we accomplish and hold those things up for our children, neices, nephews, little cousins to see. I believe that as nations we need to develop new positive things for our youth to follow. Prior to getting married, I told the woman that I am with and love that I never wanted my children to ever see me drink alcohol or be out of control. It has been over 13 years and I don't bother counting anymore. We believe that it doesn't matter if we are good role models to our community, what really matters is that we try to be good role models to our children. I am not seeking adulation or attention, I believe that if I try to be the best Indian for my children, then maybe they can have a better life than I did. One of my Elders told me when I was a very young man of 19, Indians don't have dream because we don't have heros. If we know heros we can have dreams. That has always stuck with me. I don't think you can be a hero if you believe that you are responsible providing salvation. Let others say that about you. I hope that I didn't offend you by these words. Just from a crazy Indian living on an Island. Ceeyem(my friend in our language)

You seem to be offended by CP's words. As she said, she's tootin' the horn of native women and.........she did it quite well. Did you read the part, "and so do the native men."
I'm a native man. I believe she is correct that most native men don't take the time to stand up for native women. "you don't hear them voice out on behalf of us" That is true. Most don't. Read your post carefully. You didn't. You talked about yourself for the most part.
Anyways, you said some good words. How about some good words about the native women to make your post complete.

I can only use myself as an example. I wasn't offended. I think that if people are going to give a point of view then they need to be balanced. What I was saying that if she wants to build herself up and "toot her own horn", she doesn't need to accomplish this by trying to make others less. We need to help each other rather than standing on the backs of people we want to pass. And I am not saying anybody is better than anybody else. I was trying to make a point that many of our people need each other but we don't want to help one another or acknowledge we need assistance. None of us can survive without help, whether it is our mates, family friends. Again, I can only use myself as an example: I know that I would be lost without my wife and children. I hope this clears it up.

I don't see that badmaninc was offended by CPs comments, he just has a different perspective, a unique one, working in the correctional system with individuals that exemplify the 'losers' among our population; many of whom have spent a lifetime delegating responsibility for their situation/addiction, etc., to someone other than themselves. His strength of feeling about the 'codependence' that exists in society where we so easily attribute our 'wholeness' to another or feel we aren't 'whole' because someone else isn't in our lives, or even the broad statement that 'women' save 'men' because of their virtue which comes across as rather selfabsorbed is understandable when left in context. It is dysfunctional to look to another to be saved; we can only save ourselves! I understand his point perfectly. He goes on to describe his path to illustrate that it is possible for NDN men to live a healthy life on the Red Road. He tempers his admonition to be neither grandiose or neglectful of accepting responsibility by pointing out that even when it is ourselves who we must rely on to survive and succeed 'no man is an island' and there are times when outside help can be necessary or advised. Which reminds me of the thread elsewhere about the little girl up in Canada who 'disappeared' from her family home in dead of night and the apparent lack of cooperation the RCMP are receiving from those in her immediate circle. There are times when we cannot 'do it' alone; but we can seek help without turning over responsibility at the same time. I would just like to add that being proud of who we are as NDN or female or male is great; but it would be more healthy for everyone if we left the male bashing, and name calling (inference to White women smelling like wet dogs) out of the conversation. Lifting oneself up at the expense of others rather diminishes the achievement, in my book.

Okay well first thanks to everyone who did get the jist of my post.

badmaninc. Don't be so denfensive. I wasn't talking about EVERY native man. For so many people to agree with me, I know there are more out there like what I described. Maybe not with every issue or problem. But this wasn't a thread about the problems of native men. This was a thread about the greatness of native women. Without the women, do you really think we'd still have the stories we have, or the traditions we hold dear, or the food we still eat? If you want to post about how native men keep native women afloat, do so. I would be interested in what you have to say. But please don't take my words out of context. If I thought little of native men, I wouldn't be married to one. I'm dark enough, I could've married a white guy and still had indin babies. *L*

And read my post again if you didn't. I never bashed native men, white women, homosexuals, interracials, asians, or Germans for that matter. What is with you people???? I was speaking as how we as women help our native men, damn. GOT DANG READ THE PREVIOUS POSTS BEFORE MY POST!!!!!!!!!!
And the whole point of posting my post was b/c I know the girls on here who know what I am talking about. The ones who good repped me and things. They know what I am talking about b/c if they haven't been a part of it, they have family or friends that have. That's all. What is wrong with giving my native women some encouraging words????

Speaking of defensive, why are you so defensive everytime someone disagrees with you? This type of forum lends itself to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. Comments someone makes may be reaction to the cumulative posts preceding, not just one post, your post. All you can do is post your opinion and allow others theirs. I don't think a consensus is ever going to be possible out here, we all come from different backgrounds; some of us are rez, some of us urban, some of us educated, some of us not, etc. but we come here to express our opinions freely and each one is important, stands alone, and shouldn't require constant defending. I'd have an ulcer by now if I got worked up everytime someone took issue with what I said and slammed me by SHOUTING. Just accept that people are going to disagree with you from time to time. You don't need anyone's approval.

:clapping:  :2: BIG PROPS to you CP for giving an idea of what some of us Native Women deal with on a daily basis, and that's NOT EVEN touching on what we deal with mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You gave me a sense of pride that I sometimes forget to give myself, and I'm sure I speak for many. Those of us who go thru all this daily and then to feel proud of ourself and look at ourself as someone of high regards is hard at times. Thank you for your words of understanding and encouragement.

Thanks n8tivegrl for the props!
I would reply back to the negative stuff but I only reply once on things that are negative. All I wanted to do was to give native women encouragement and to set an awareness that we're not alone on this topic. Why is it I'm getting bashed for that? Seems ironic. *L* Anytime we encourage our own we get bashed for it. Oh well. I got thick skin. IT MAY BE OLD (KB reference. *L*) But it'll do just fine for lashings.

to everyone who disagrees with my thread.... BLEH. :Chatter
Shake them haters off'
