I was about the suggest redox rxns, but you might make me demonstrate. I don't think I've balanced a reaction by oxidation number or charge since I taught freshman chem.

BTW, you might want to add one more hydrogen molecule to your reactants, LOL. (I'll go in a corner and slap myself now.)

But, if you'd like to discuss polymers and interaction will light, I think I might be up for that without having to review, LOL.

Woops. I typed it from my blackberry so I made a typo, somehow I knew I was going to do that but didn't double check.

Orgo and biochem, no wonder. I'll stick to p-chem thank you very much. I don't have to synthesize anything -- a great boon for the safety of the world. I kind of sucked at anything I had to do in orgo lab that didn't involve an FTIR or NMR.

But work's done for the day. So I can go home and play with my silver clay. I just need to figure out how I'm going to get the beadwork lining inside my locket.

And thanks guys. Y'all really made my day.

Congrats Ol Chemist. I got a chemistry question for you. Yu know how some elements are unstable and react with air or water and so are stores in oil? Well are any of them safe enough to demonstarte this at home to my kids and which one would be safest? ...we are continuing our study of the periodic table in sept so thats why I was wondering. They are also learning the element song...it's so cute :)

Ahh, yes pyrophoric elements and compounds. These are nothing to mess around with; they require care and training to handle safely. There was an unfortunate accident almost two years ago where a researcher was killed when the t-butyl lithium she was transferring was exposed to air and started a fire.

Pyrophoricity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Allotropes of phosphorus (white and yellow phosphorus), sodium, and uranium are probably the best known pyrophoric elements. But there are many others.

For a home demo... Use a flint and steel, like a striker for a torch. The sparks are finely divided metal particles burning in air. Please keep away from clothing etc. and wear your safety glasses -- can't start them out with good lab practices too soon.

But honestly, beyond that I'd leave the pyrophorics to the pros and the world of video demos.

J. Chem Ed has some excellent videos of chem demos with pyrophoric compounds as part of their periodic table CD-Rom. However it is a tad expensive.

Web Elements has some videos and some good info, but is littered with advertising.

I love chem, well not the math part.... I remember back in college we had to take science as an elective and I chose chem. I didn't have too much of a problem when we got to organic chem, actually did quite well, then again it was an introductory class so it wasn't meant to be hard. After the course was over I did find that I was able to understand more about the impact chemistry has around us whether we know it or not. In fact I was able to pronounce some of the names of the products used in the shampoo I buy (which I use a lot of, lol).

@Suzze, maybe a good lecture would include exactly what I discovered. Its everywhere from hygiene products, to coffee, soda, medicines, all the way to power plants that use fossile fuels (coal, gas...) and nuclear reactions to generate the electricity that you use everyday.
