Grape dumplings

1 24 ounce bottle of grape juice
1/2 grape juice bottle of water
1 c white sugar

2c self rising flour 1/2 cup white sugar
1 c water

Empty grape juice into pot. Add water and 1 c of sugar to mixture. Bring to a rolling boil. In a medium bowl place 1/2 c sugar and flour. Mix with enough water to make a dough consistent with biscuit dough. Drop in to boiling juice by teaspoonfuls until all dough is used. Continue to boil until all dumplings are done. Break open a dumpling to ensure that dough is cooked through.Set aside to cool slightly. if you like them sweeter increase sugar.

Season to taste and serve hot.
Goes good with fry bread.

I use can whole kernal corn. I have also put in hominy if I did not have corn. As for the salt pork I have used hamburger so this is a nice one to play with and use what you have in your pantry.
i will post up the ojibwe version of that later. MD and his people have a totally different version that is soooo good. going to bed. just wanted to see what my bestie posted. should of know she would post one of my favorite indian soups ever!!!

Baked Raccoon

Cut all excess fat off raccoon. Put in preheated dutch oven on a rack so the coon isn't in the grease so much. Core 6 apples and stuff with brown sugar and top with a pat of butter and put them in with the coon. 4 - 6 coals underneath then heap coals on top. Bake till tender. 2 - 2 1/2 hours ought to do. Tastes best if baked outside but an oven will do a decent job. Serve with fry bread. Tried making vegetables with it once for a side dish, but nobady ate them, just the coon, apples and fry bread.

we use dried corn here in the south and it has either beef or salt pork (salt pork mostly when there are more soups to choose from) ie, hominy and pork, meat gravy and all those other bad foods *L*

I didn't grow up on a rez, but I know we have/had some foods in common...

Fried spam w/bbq sauce (or ketchup)

++++++++++

Spam Spaghetti

Cut the spam into chunks and fry. Either add to spaghetti sauce and serve over spaghetti, or make your own sauce.

A couple cans of tomato sauce (and if ya have some tomato paste to add to the sauce, even better). Add herbs to taste - some oregano, basil, salt, pepper and garlic.

Boiled Wienies (w/bbq sauce or ketchup)

Cut a few slices in the wienies. Boil them for a few minutes until cooked through. Eat with bbq sauce or ketchup.

I loved ketchup sandwiches as a kid! - I think that one's self-explanatory.

Something I liked as a kid and still like today:

Radish Sandwiches

Butter two slices of bread. Add thin-sliced radishes (I like a couple layers of radish). Season with salt and pepper. You don't have to, but you can also add some lettuce and tomato and make it an RLT sandwich.

Yummmm!

I can probably come up with some more. I'll keep thinking.

++++++++++++++++

@neling4 - I'd forgotten fried corn!!! My Mom used to make that. I know it was bacon grease my Mom used! Mmmmmm.

++++++++++++++++

@Burntfinger - That sounds pretty good! Mom only made raccoon once. I wonder if she didn't cut off the extra fat. I remember it being very greasy. I forget how she cooked it, but the way she made it was nasty. I've never asked for her recipe.

The NDN and the Jew...THAT'S funny!!!

Some stereotypes have some truth - we do tend to be very food-centric. I know very well the

My dad used to slice up wienies like that before boiling them! Aw...memories!! Come to think of it, we ate a LOT of processed meat when I was growing up...baloney, hotdogs...SPAM was a treat!

Did you know if you make enough slices in the wienies, they will curl right around and you can eat them on a hamburger bun?? Comes in handy, now and then.
