Seminole Indian Dies in Wildfires

Reverend Kelly Tiger, Sr., 69, collapsed and died while battling flames on his family's property in Hughes County, Oklahoma. Burns covered 70 percent of his body but doctors determined that he died of a heart attack.

Tiger was one of the last of his generation of traditional people who carried on traditional life and religion among the Seminole people.

"I believe my father was trying to get back to us," his son, Kelly Tiger Jr., 47, said. "He saw the winds shift and the fire coming at our house. That's when he started running toward us."

Family and friends bid him farewell in a crowded hospital room. "Hundreds of people stopped by," his son said. "People sang hymns in Creek and Choctaw. They prayed in Seminole and Kiowa... It was quite moving to see."

Services were held on Friday, December 30, 2005 at 6 p.m. at the Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville, 224 N. Gulf. The funeral services were held at Barnard Memorial United Methodist Church in Holdenville at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the church is located at 8th and Gulf in Holdenville, Oklahoma.
