I know the casinos on my rez has done some good. They provide jobs and extra money for the community. Many have moved back to the rez. Many programs have developed--more help for our elders, better health care, better homes, advances in education. Twenty years ago there were no jobs in the U.P. The only job for our men was commercial fishing. Most of the kids left the area immediately after high school graduation. Now even the communities around the rez benefit.
But...my parents' home is across the road from Bay Mills Resort, so now it seems that when relatives visit, all they do is gamble. We don't have fun together like we used to at family gatherings.

I live in Pennsylvania and we don't have a single recognized Indian tribe in the state. So our governor pushed thru a law legalizing gambling casino's to be run by the state. They are going to use the money to fund our school's(thats the story anyways). So there will be a casino in every big town in PA. Yet one more oppurtunity to screw the indians taken advantage of by the government. Why drive to an Indian casino when you can stop on the way for groceries.

Good luck in GA

we have two tribal casinos on our rez here. these casinos have boosted the economy here on our rez. they have provided hundreds of jobs for our ppl, plus they get great bennies! we have seen some of our ppl start at the bottom when the casinos first opened and are now at the top, running our casinos...which is really great!

of course you have those "regulars" that sit @ the bar every wknd....just for their entertainment....but that's their choice. and yes, i've seen families break up because of gambling issues...but again...that's their choice.

we have a lot of "white" folks come by the bus loads to eat/gamble/attend a concert or whatever....

to me it's all business....

here in sask we have siga (www.siga.sk.ca) who has at this time four ndn casinos (all on ndn land but three of the four are in cities) and one on the way. used to work in one of them - sure i saw the regulars in at 9:00 am leaving at 3:00 - 4:00 am. i used to wonder where they were gettin the money to do this all day/everyday. then you see stories in the news bout ppl who embezled (sp?) from their companies or lost all their savings.

i used to have ppl flip out on me over money THEY lost there - how it was ALL my fault and i should be ASHAMED of working there. we were trained just to smile and say nothing - my hubby said once to a lady who was yellin at him - "that's why they call it gambling, ma'am." she could do nothing but walk away. it never really bothered me at first but then it started to get to me - so i left. that and a azzhole of a fellow employee .. lol. the money i was makin there wasn't THAT great to deal with all that - wages and $40 (real slow day) - $200 (friday night in the pit) a day in tips.

sure siga and the casinos bring money back into the communities and sponsor everything under the saskatchewan sky ... but at what cost?

didn't notice any increase in "drunks" in the area ... but you can get $5 for everyone YOU bring in to apply for player's club card. dang this one guy kinda had a good thing goin makin about 50 to 70 dollars a day .. lol.

Thanks for the imput everyone! Like I said this place would be run by non-natives, so I have to wonder about how it would be operated, plus it would be near the airport. At this point knowing our county commissioners I wouldn't put it past them to give who ever opens it a HUGE tax break, then let things just drift until it became a problem or something. Remember this is the same county commissioners we had to FIGHT to keep our fire station.

Las Vegas doesn't have NDN casinos and they have alot of business!lol Closest casino to us is Santa Ynez (Chumash) and there's alot of casinos further south. Never heard anything bad about them'cept that people leave a grip of money there!
