I think a lot of that has to do with the area you live in. My son is in N> In. (an hour east of Chicago) and can't find regular grits, only instant. I periodically will send him a bag. The same with cornmeal and flour. Down here, it's easy to find self rising, but up north it's harder-or it used to be. I've always heard thar shrimp and grits started as a Creole thing which is why I made the comment about having to be a little Southern.

Couples at my age, women often let their partner sit beside me in public transportation. I dislike that because since 11 years I wish I had a partner myself. But either total sweethearts want my attention or they say, they prefer to admire a good looking woman like me instead of wanting a relationship. Sweethearts!

I don't think they are sweethearts and the translation for the bag-word I used before WD transformed it into sweethearts said it means dumb person. And I think it is dumb to reject a good person.

Some of those language translation programs build their translations based on data gathering from samples of natural language text gathered on the internet. In my experience, the internet does not bring out our best behaved, most cultured utterances. These programs seem very inaccurate at selecting the appropriate register for a sentence. I'm not horribly surprised, they would offer a middle-school, locker room appropriate word choice.

Last Friday, I was dealing with an SDS and instructions for a oxidizing solution used in jewelry making. The solution is produced in Germany and is not widely marketed. There is only one US importer and they only bring a few tens of liters into the US. So, there isn't anything in English available on the internet for this product. The manufacturer very kindly provided instructions and an SDS.

The SDS is pretty reasonable. There are fairly good services that prepare translations that conform to local legal requirements.

The instructions were another matter. I'm a chemist and a silversmith. I know roughly how this stuff is to be used and I know the general precautions one takes with the component chemicals. Had I not been, there might have been issues. They had clearly been translated the UK. As an American I don't really speak English, LOL. But, I think some of the word selections would have been very odd even in the UK.

LOL, that is a difficulty which goes way back into 1982. I remember the English translation for a dot matrix printer into German although the original instructions seems to have been written in Japanese.

LOL, if you like. I might give you an try on an amateur translation.

And the chinese translated a manual for a rice cooker into german like this: (Dunst)wasser wegwerfen. Cannot throw away water, ausgießen would be the proper way to say, haha, yes and it was about a centiliter only.

Work is busy with hurricane evacuees. For once it isn't us. LOL! They keep changing the track bubble and the way it looks now, by the weekend we will be getting rain. How much is a guess. I missed seeing the track change on the news earlier today, but should have guessed something was up when they came and graded our road. They only do that if it's going to pour.

OLchemist, you did good in the Apache thread. I don't know why the Oz lady felt personally attacked. Just sensitive I guess.

If I had the German copy, I'd take you up on that.

Honestly, I can figure enough of the instructions to use the product safely. It is kind of funny. On the SDS all the German chemical names were translated on the instructions about one third were left in German. However, English chemical nomenclature has such a strong German and shared Latin linguistic inheritance that if I sound the words out, I know what the compounds are. Kaliumquecksilbercyanid (don't worry this isn't in the oxidizer) and Sulfatlosung are obvious. While we say Potassium in English not Kalium, the symbol is a K and everyone who has had chemistry in high school knew that at one point.

There are two sentences that are intended to caution against cross contaminating the solution with an acidic pretreatment where they use protract/protracted. Because I know that acid and this solution aren't safe to mix, I can tell they are using protracted to mean carrying retained oxidizer or pretreatment on the surface of the metal into the other solution. But, while conceptually there is overlap, protract/protracted are not used that way in American English and probably not British English either. It's such an odd use, I wonder how they got it. Does a German word or phrase that means means retaining liquid, transferring one thing to another, or cross contaminating sound like protract?

"verschleppen" in the sense of "in die Länge ziehen" might be translated as protract but that wouldn't be used in German in that context of chemicals. Very odd.

"Rückstände" = residue of solution one on the surface of the metal should be removed before treating the metal with the second solution.

"verunreinigt" would be contaminated or polluted but never protracted.

May be reading the translated SDS and the German original text I might have a fair guess on what happened and perhaps why.

One of my colleagues, an English teacher, did in younger years translations and we discussed about difficulties in translating scientific texts without education in the desired scientific field.

I will admit I nearly fell off of my chair when I read that. LOL! Sometimes people just get a certain perception in their heads and nothing will change it. Seems to me like she was determined to see your words as bullying and nothing was going to change that.

Right, that's why I figured out you can cook much more in a chinese rice-cooker than just rice, whole meals, haven't used it in a long time though. And protract also as one of the german equivalent phrase: In die Länge ziehen, for example you can a chewing gum in die Länge ziehen when it's soft.

Two comments:

When you run Rückstände through Google translate you're offered "arrears" and "backlog". These are financial terms. Context and register are so important, especially with technical translations. If I had run that word in a sentence, I'd probably get a different translation. But, machines suck at context.

You Germans are like the Lakota. Stick a prefix here, an infix there and a suffix at the end, and boom, you have a word that encloses an entire English sentence, once you account for inflection and instrumentality. It gives us native English speakers a headache, LOL.

Spent the day watching Florence. It seems like later in the weekend we will be getting a little rain. The hotel is full of evacuees-and their pets. A lot of these people seem to think they will be able to go home Saturday or Sunday. I just want to ask them "what part of rainfall and flooding similar to Hurricane Harvey" don't you grasp. People who live on islands are going to have to wait until the bridges are inspected. Not to mention their won't be any power and they will probably be under a boil water alert for a few days. I understand their wanting to get back home, but if they can't get closer than 50 or 60 miles to home, they are going to be stranded.
