I was supposed to pack and leave on Monday night for the coast. I came home and the 17 year old heater wan't working. We're going to flirt with freezing this holiday, so I couldn't leave it, not with an elderly sick cat. But, you'd think that in the 4th largest metropolitan area in the US, I could find a 24hr repair place with an open appointment on Monday. The best I could get was a standby on Tuesday and a definite for today. Thankfully, they could get to me on Tuesday.

The repair estimate was 80% of the replacement cost, with a fairly bleak long term prognosis. I bit the bullet and bought a new system. I'll give the repair guys their due. Four pm to 11pm yesterday and 9am to 2pm today. My attic is not a fun place. In 2001, code on attic decking around the heater/ac was 18". In 2018, it's 30". They had to increase the decking. Bring the gas piping up to code... Build new duct work... Those poor guys worked their hearts out.

The new system is disturbingly quiet. I keep wandering in to check on the thermostat. You could hear the three stage ignition process on the old one -- whirl, roar, fires of hell. Then the fan came on and you quit conversing until it stopped. This one is quiet, but moves mass quantities of air. I keep peaking into the living room to see if Miss Gulch on her bicycle is blowing by above the mantel.

Friday or Monday will be city inspection. But, at least I'll have heat until then. I'm a wimp. Two mornings of a 48F house, have been two mornings too many.

But, I'm not getting to the coast for my cousin's fine smoked turkey. I just went to the store to buy a turkey and fixings. I'm not a violent woman by nature. Killing my fellow shoppers to get a spot beside the freezer case of turkeys was more than I could do. Besides at this late date, killing a few Thanksgiving revelers is somewhat pointless... Now 1621, LOL. I'll be having pot roast.

Sorry about your holiday and freezing. We had new unit less than a year ago. Tried and tried to figure out contractor number on the bill and verify warranty on internet. Never got all pieces of unit warrantied. Thank God it works. Holidays, I have to have a pizza never get that often cause it is bad for you so holidays I fudge.

Well , so far so good with our furnace........it's a few years past when I thought we'd be replacing it ! My health issues have hindered my entire summer and fall. Apparently the kidney stone had triggered my immune system and the result of a longer than normal healing time and side effects are an intense flare up of my rheumatoid arthritis ! Some days my hands and wrists are nearly immovable ! I have gotten to the point I've gone back on some meds I've been avoiding just because of the after effects.....I am thankful for all we've had , all we still have , and all the Creator continues to provide for us. I hope everyone here has a wonderful Thanksgiving , and remember that family and traditions are an important part of our lives.

Thanks, Ches. (We need to get you a new nickname -- one Siri doesn't want to change to Chex.)

I had pizza last night while the gas was off. We have a new trendy pizza chain in the neighborhood. I gave them a try. I felt guilt eating while the installers slaved away in my nippy attic, without even taken a dinner break. I had to send home some loaves of the pumpkin bread I made to take to my cousin's.

The experience was a humbling reminder that I'd be a failure at the old days. One trip outside the tipi (Serious, Siri I meant tipi not pulpit) or soddy in a howling blizzard for a potty break and I'd break.

Wardancer, you are so right. Thank you for reminding me of priorities.

I'm keeping you and Eyes in my prayers. I hope you are on the mend soon.

Mom is making sweet potato rolls. I could practically smell the rising dough through the phone. Hot from the oven with butter mixed with a little cinnamon and sugar, they're a little bit of heaven. I'd make some, if I could find yeast around that wasn't a million years old.

I did get to hear again how I wasn't there to brine and cook the bird. Mom has a paralyzed hand and forearm, turkey roasters are hard for her to handle. As soon as I was old enough to safely lift a 25lb bird and pan in and out of the oven, I got to get up at 5am and wrestle the bird. I do miss the wild ones my great uncle used to hunt. If they've been in good forage, they are some dang fine food.

I'm going to make pumpkin pies in the morning. I got a last minute invite to a friend's house for dinner. I don't want to arrive empty handed. I made some cranberry chutney to take to my cousin's but I had put it in the freezer, since I couldn't eat but a few spoonfuls. I hope the container will thaw in time.

@OLChemist-you had me cracking up telling Siri you really did mean tipi not pulpit. I needed that laugh.

@WD-hope the RA backs off soon. You're right, family and traditions are important.

As for me, I'm thankful I finally have a doctor appointment Mon. to get my arm checked out. A few weeks ago, I was reaching behind the passenger seat of the car to get my purse, and felt a small tug in my upper right arm. I didn't think that much about it, but it's getting worse by the day. If I reach just right, I can feel whatever I messed up from my wrist to my collar bone. I've seen a meme floating around FB that says something along the lines of "gettin' old ain't for sissies". True dat. Have a safe turkey day everybody.

I feel with you.

17 years is not such a bad time.

I have a heating and warm water gas combination. Within 25 years, I have already three replacements. And the warranty time was always expired.

It was always very expensive. Sigh, but no heating in winter isn't a good thing.

I suppose, the builder and warranty giver has computed the time when the system will fail in a such a way that the warranty time is expired with warranty 100%.

@wardancer I will pray for you.

Well, we're in the final stage with the heater install -- waiting for the city inspector. Once that is done, it will be over.

Well, I finally got to have a day of actual entertainment on my "vacation". I was able to get into the studio and do some work yesterday. I've been working - albeit very slowly -- on a silver box. I bent the large sterling overlay panel into a cylinder. It didn't fold or distort along the edges of the overlay elements, which is always a risk. This was the make or break step. If it hadn't worked, I'd have been putting a good 4 toz into the recycle bag to sell back to Rio.

Today I started on the lid and closure. I'm making a tab closure, but the lid section that fits inside the closure can be worn are a brooch. It's a bit of a fabrication challenge. I've been saving a lovely cab of Hubei spiderweb turquoise. Joe Jelks at Horizon Minerals cut it. It's a lovely piece. The back of the cab has a high quality finish. So, I'll do shadow box cut out to show it off. A little secret for the wearer.

I have the same problem as you, Wardancer.Sometimes i can't hold a cup of coffee in my hand.As long as i don't work it's fine but if i do something of heavy lifting or so it's agony. The specialist in the hospital said they could do an operation but there's only a 50/50 chance of succes or worse. So, i leave it like it is.I get paid by the health insurance, it's not to much but i manage to stay alive...lol.

We are having a small cold snap. Going down to the upper 20s tonight, and will barely hit 50 tomorrow. It's supposed to be back in the upper 70s by the weekend. Yay!

I have a torn muscle in my arm. I forget the exact name. Had to have an x-ray and if it shows that the muscle has pulled away from the shoulder socket, I will have to have surgery. If it hasn't pulled away, I just have a long road of PT ahead. The PA started laughing and shaking her head when I was telling her my symptoms ( I've been seeing her for about 8 yrs. so I wasn't offended.) and I asked her what was so funny. She is looking at surgery in a couple of weeks for the same thing. She hurt hers moving. I almost think I would rather have the surgery and get it over with than face months of PT-and still possibly end up having to have surgery.

I am sorry to hear about what must be painful. I have bad shoulders. One was getting better, and I was putting together a new yard storage box for my gas and chain saws. Missed the soda stool I was using and rolled off the side of the seat landing on the back of the shoulder. Lost about 80% of the improvement in that shoulder from the episode putting in a new bathroom faucet. Now it hurts to sleep on Lt side. Be happy. They call these the golden years.

Thought my butt was big enough, I wouldn’t miss it. Got the plastic yard storage box together tight as a tick.

Dropping by to say hello so "Hello!"...

My wife and I have been cray busy going through the licensing process to become adoptive parents, which has meant tons of paperwork, background checks, meetings, trainings, and housework. Almost all of our paperwork is done and we have one last training to attend, which isn't until January. We haven't even started the ICWA adoption process yet, which I'm assuming is going to add another mound of paperwork.

OL, that sucks that you had to replace your heater but at least you shouldn't have to worry about it again for a long time. We recently had our oil tank replaced, didn't cost us anything since we rent. I came home late the night they installed it to the strong smell of heating oil. I went into the basement to discover that the installers didn't install one of the caps on the tank. Called the 24 hour emergency number and around 2am a tech arrived, looked at it, and said "Yeah, that's a big no no!", he had some spare caps in his truck and he capped it off. The smell took a few days to go away. Now we have the annual maintenance this Friday and maybe they can figure out why the one 3rd floor radiator barely gets warm, it's getting water and it has been bled.

Thanksgiving week was lame, my wife and I both had colds and I managed to catch a second cold just as the first was going away. I pretty much stayed in bed for a week since both colds were quite nasty.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

I think they are called flapjacks in English, I know them as "Haferflocken Plätzchen"

It's Decemeber and those of Mom are the best.
Hope you enjoy them.

Haferflocken Plätzchen = oatmeal cookies

Flapjacks are a slightly sweet, griddle fried cake, generally eaten for breakfast.

I think flap jacks are pancakes. My wife goes to Mighty Dollar every Thursday. I really like their semi hard frosted oatmeal cookies. I can with effort break them in two and get the half in my mouth at night when I am doing my nightly short Bible reading.
