I need to work in my greens. I think I need bacon dripping or some ham. There's a salty/smokey undertone missing.

Lil' bit of bacon seasoning goes great in greens.

We are in hurricane prep mode down here. Not sure yet what Dorian is going to do, but I've got hotel reservations inland, just in case. LOL! They were hard to get, too. Stupid storm, doesn't know what it's going to do.

Driving crazy it seems doesn't need a storm. Normal days are already enough to get people driving crazy.

Holidays are over and you can see the normal madness in driving every morning and afternoon now. Beaming to and from work might be a good thing.

Quite difficult being thousand of miles away. Sigh. I went to competition shotgun and Lever action and go next Sunday primitive bow shooting and thereafter muzzle loader competition.

If you ever hear that there will be a ndn pow wow in GE again, shout out loud that I can hear it.

Corbin, kentucky piw wow was not as well organized as the last 3 times. Plenty of prize money, but some competitions only had one or two entrants and there were prizes for 1,2,3 place. One time I counted the regalia in the arena for a general event and there were 30 out there. I hope more spectators come next year. There was plenty of vendors.

Yes-and they get greedy,too, over stuff like gas and bottled water.There were 2 accidents Sat. on I95 within 6 hours. We are close enough to the interstate to be able to hear the traffic. It didn't use to be so loud, but they've recently cut down about 20 acres of our wooded buffer. We are now 100 miles inland. Left yesterday under mandatory evacuations. Looks like we may be here until Friday. The storm doesn't appear like it's going to be all that bad for our area now, but with temps going to be in the high 90s, I'm not going home until I know we have power. As long as Dorian has been beating the Bahamas, I'm starting to think it's not ever going to get here and get gone.

How's the English visitor, WD?

I celebrated my holiday by lying in bed. I got sick late Sunday night. It was a miserable kind of sick too. Just sick enough you don't want to do anything and not sick enough to sleep away the day. I spent my Monday sitting in a chair mouth breathing, staring in space and looking like a poster child for premarital genetic screening.

The Siamese brat tried to kill me by piling every last mylar pompom she owns just outside my closed door. When I went to the bathroom, I nearly broke my leg doing the fat lady version of the "Oh, yuck! I stepped on something squishy in the dark" two step. I kept jumping because every time I moved my foot, it came down on something soft, damp (cat spit) and slightly wiggly. When I got to the light switch, I found 40+ of those blasted cat toys and one mummified lizard heaped outside the door. I just prayed the lizard wasn't among the things I stepped on.

Our visit was (in my best English accent) Quite enjoyable ! Their culture is quite different than ours and the humor as well. I'd say it ranked about an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 ! LOL Took them out and about around here and they just had trouble comprehending all the wide open space around ! Seems in England most of the green space is gone.....only in parks and specific "green areas". Took them to the Fort and was surprised by an exhibition of Native dancing by a family from Oklahoma. Even more surprised as we introduced ourselves and they knew us ! LOL The world is not so large ! Took them shooting one morning , something they could never do in England , as their laws are so strict on ownership. They all 3 absolutely enjoyed it ! It was a 3 day visit that we were sorry to see end. They are on their way to San Fransisco via many miles of National Park covered itinerary. Should take them about 2 weeks to get there. It was a wonderful visit !

That was what struck me on my first trip to Europe. Even out in the countryside, the land was profoundly marked by millennia human occupation and exploitation. Centuries of serfs welding plows and grazing animals had reshaped the earth.

It's really fairly amazing that they managed the population density that they had. European staple crops had much lower calorie and protein yields per acre than New World staple crops. A tribute to the labor of their animals. They never would have achieved the same population levels without animal labor.

They hope that we will come and see them in England , but we told them that the chances of us leaving the U.S. were between slim and none ! So they think they'll be back maybe as soon as next year or the year after !Like I said , it was a wonderful visit , both educational and cultural. One of the 3 was a history buff and had been reading about Wounded Knee , Sand Creek , and The Wa****a , and so was in awe of our home and the regalia , dance paraphernalia, eagle staffs and pics that decorate our home !

It also boggles my mind that with the space issues over there and place the size of our 2 acres would be worth an enormous amount of money over there ! Hard to imagine that ! We take so much for granted here in the states !

It happens almost every time I go out for some groceries or any place that german men verbally or physically attack me and it's men aged 55 - 90. An old man maybe 85 did not wanted me to get off the bus before him so he pushed me out when I went off anyway; I got pushed into the train, out of their 2 meter wide way but it was not wide enough for a single man to walk. Oh no, I do not want to mention all those other maybe 300 incedendes. Also women aren't much better and once a man said to me people like me should get destroyed because 2 muslim guys were following me around just to annoy me and I said to a woman maybe my age 60+ that those sh..... guys keep following me. So this german guy 50+ yelled at me that he's a foreigner too and people like me should get destroyed because I said that sh..... word about. I was scared, annoyed but never ever get any help by others. They just watch. I hardly ever go out anymore anyway but even for the little shopping time those whoever aggressive germans 55+ keep getting at me.

*Rose whips up some spundekase and homemade soft pretzels for Spiritflight.*

Actually, I wish I had some right now. It would be worth the wrath of the dairy, LOL. I like mine with celery sticks, rather than pretzels or crackers.

For those who didn't grow up with a lot of German neighbors, spundekase is a cheese spread/dip with onion, garlic and paprika. Very yummy. It's great for football game day parties too.

Spundekase

1/2 c. cream cheese, room temp;
1/2 c. sour cream;

Think of what two acres of land are worth in Manhattan. But that holds only true in Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Stuttgart and so on for the very high prices. Recently the lower priced smaller towns around, prices went up a lot.

Even in the regions with low people density I know you are never really alone in Germany.

Spundekase

1/2 c. cream cheese, room temp;
1/2 c. sour cream;
1/2 c. quark, fromage blanc or well drained greek yogurt;
1/2 small white onion, very finely minced;
1 glove garlic crushed;
1 tsp sweet paprika;
ground black pepper;
salt.

Mix cheeses and sour cream, until well blended. Stir in onion, garlic and paprika. Add salt and pepper to taste. Chill, tightly covered, for at least 4 hours.
Good idea. I do like celery sticks better as well. Pretzels here mostly come salty and no, nothing for me. Those are typically bavarian snacks. Quark is sour too, so Ieave off the sour cream as I am having a stomach illness,can't eat sour stuff much.

If anyone likes self made Ajoli dip, contains mayonaise, yoghurt, honey or sugar and could add some curry powder.

A typical veggie soup with meat contains a chopped leek perch, 2 chopped carrots, a quarter of a celery ball also chopped up, couple of herbal lovage twigs, a flat tbl. spoon of beef broth, 2 slices of beef leg bones, bit of pepper, maybe more salt or a few maggi drops, maybe a few peas or other veggies like green beans and 2 potatoes cut in small cubes, cook the bones first to get the meat off, then add the rest, add a chopped up garlic clove or use garlic powder if you like, cook for maybe 10 minutes in pressure cooker, in the end garnish the soup with chopped parsley.
